Latest driver is installed but cant communicate with nvidia driver

I am running a rtx 2060 maxq on ubuntu 20.04. On the Additional Drivers tab of Software & Updates I am listed as “Using NVIDIA driver metapackage from nvidia-driver-470 (proprietary)”

usr@user:~$ prime-select query
nvidia

usr@user:~$ nvidia-smi
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

I have seen some similar error messages on othe message boards but their solotions didnt seem to resolve this issue for me.

For anyone not owning a crystal ball, to get any idea what is going on with your computer, you’d need to run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root and attach the resulting file here.
