No nvidia device | installation problem

Hi,

I am trying to install the nvidia driver in my hp laptop (ubuntu 8.04). When I run the driver after shutting down X windows. I get the following message in the nvidia log file

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module ‘nvidia.ko’. This happens most
   frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or

   improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs

   from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as

   rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from

   obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s).

-1 No such device

[ 461.427368] NVRM: No NVIDIA graphics adapter found!

The thing is I don’t have an nvidia graphics device on my laptop. I just want to run cuda programs in emulation mode. Is it possible to actually install the driver if there is no nvidia cuda capable graphics device? If so how can i circumvent this problem.

The only reason to install the driver is if you have NVIDIA hardware. HOSTEMU doesn’t use the driver.

Thank you. I was able to run the samples without the driver.
