When using VRR with the Alienware AW2725DF (2560x1440 360Hz DisplayPort) monitor and the frame rate is low, the monitor sometime loses video signal. The issue is probably due to frame rate going out of range 48-360Hz. The issue doesn’t happens with my 2 other screens (144Hz and 75Hz). I’m using the Nvidia driver 570.144.
Here is the EDID of the monitor:
aw2725df_edid.gz (267 Bytes)
The issue is still present in the 575.57.08 driver
We have a bug 5474448 internally filed for tracking purpose.
Shall keep updated on the progress.
Thank you for support.
Hi @thesword53
I had Display Acer XB273UF handy which supports resolution 2560 x 1440 and refresh rate as 360 Hz connected via DP but did not get repro.
Later I applied EDID shared by you but but I am not seeing 2560x1440 with 360Hz option ( restricts up to 240Hz).
I think edid is missing DSC descriptors which is preventing me to use 360Hz refresh rate.
Could you please shared edid again.
You won’t be able to reproduce this behavior with a monitor with a gsync module because the module by its nature prevents this from happening. I would recommend using a Freesync monitor that is gsync compatible. My Asus PG32UCDM does this occasionally and has a range of 48-240hz. There is a huge thread on ROG about it and it appears this affects a lot of monitors for some reason.

Explanation what is going on from Blur Busters
HI @tda0626
I get hold of display Asus PG32UCDM and set display resolution as 3840x2160 with refresh rate 240 Hz.
I repeated same steps multiple times as reported by @thesword53 in shared video but did not observe black screen.
Could you please help to share reliable repro steps along with nvidia bug report so that I can match another config and retry for local repro.
It seems to happen randomly for me. I would recommend using KDE Plasma and turn VRR on to always to force it to happen. It might take some time for it to happen.
My screen has a resolution of 2560x1440 and and the issue happens only when I set the refresh rate to 360Hz. At 240Hz, I don’t have this issue. On Windows I only see the issue when entering to exclusive fullscreen. Unfortunately, for now I don’t have access to my desktop computer till September 23.
could be related to the issue i have where vrr at low framerates is not working on linux.
if vrr range goes down to 48hz (which is common), on windows you are able to use vrr normally above that. below that, the frames pushed to the monitor are doubled to preserve vrr. you will notice this if you lock your game fps to 40 for example, and your OSD fps counter will show 80.
under linux, this behaviour does not occur. under the vrr limit, my OSD counter becomes sporadic.
Hi @tda0626
I spent couple of days using Plasma on wayland and X protocol but still not able to duplicate issue.
Could you please help to share nvidia bug report and relaible repro steps so that I can try to match setup as close as possible.
You can use the program vrrtest to try frame rates below the monitors vrr range. You should see LFC does not activate and the FPS counter on your monitor will no longer be correct
Hi @faz
As per this thread, we are tracking display signal lost issue, and I have been not able to observe it internally after running vrrtest.
Could you please share your display model and nvidia bug report.
To reproduce the issue 100% of time:
- Set the display to 360Hz and set VRR to “Automatic” in KDE wayland session.
- Launch
vrrtestin fullscreen. - Quit
vrrtest
When vrrtest exists, you should see the monitor blanking for a short period.
Repro steps:
- Set VRR to “Always”
- Watch a Youtube video full screen
The refresh rate is all over the place. In the 1st video, I get a few black screens and I show the monitor’s OSD, which will show the refresh fluctuating all over the place. Sorry for the quality, it was a cellphone capture so that i could show the OSD.
Edit: The videos are mp4 so your browser may not be able to play it and may have to download it.
Second video showing erratic refresh
3rd video showing the refresh ramps up whenever mouse cursor is moved while video is playing full screen. When mouse is not moving, the refresh is all over the place.
Hi @thesword53
I was able to repro issue locally and observed that when vrrtest exits, display goes blank for couple of seconds and recover back.
I will update further when there is input from dev engineering team on this behavior.
Thanks all for helping in sharing repro steps.
Thank you for support.
That is awesome. Thank you for your attention to this. This affects a lot of people.
Hi,
any news about this issue ?
I have a PG32UCDP.L
I experienced black screens…
