No video display on one external monitor

Good morning,

I am wondering if someone is able to help; an issue has appeared with my work laptop very suddenly. I left my laptop for an hours break, came back & there was no display on the external monitor.

The system did upgrade from 20.04 LTS to 22.04 recently but the display seemed to work.

Objective: output display on HDMI
Problem: Cannot display on external monitor; note hooking up to a TV using the same cable on HDMI works. The monitor in question itself is working just fine as it works with my other linux distro & Windows PC that I have.
Attempts: Re-install kernel & headers & nvidia drivers

All external connector are on the intel igpu, the nvidia gpu has none so fiddling with the nvidia driver won’t do a thing.
Since this happened spontaneously, I suspect the hdmi port is broken. Did you already try to use a different connector, there also seem to be two displayport connectors?

I did not realise it would be iGPU only. I am assuming there is an issue with the default drivers on Ubuntu 22.04 possibly then?

I haven’t got a displayport cable at hand nor a compatible display.

However, the HDMI connector on the laptop works with other displays (my TV) so the port must be OK.
All other devices in my household can use the same HDMI cable to connect to the monitor in question.

I am not entirely sure how else I can debug this.

There are also no error messages in dmesg from the i915 driver.
Since you’re now on a 5.17-oem kernel, you could check if you still have a 5.15 stock kernel available in grub menu and boot that to check whether this is a i915 driver bug.

I’ve reinstalled kernel 5.14.0-1054-oem.

- Using USB-C to HDMI adapter laptop → TV: OK
- Using laptop [HDMI] → TV: OK
- Using various HDMI cables inc 1.4 cable I’ve got at hand → TV: OK
- Sky Q box → monitor in question: NOT OK
- PlayStation 4 → monitor in question: NOT OK
- PlayStation 2 (720 up scaler using HDMI) → monitor in question: OK
- PlayStation 3 [HDMI] → monitor in question: NOT OK
- USB-C to HDMI adapter laptop → monitor in question: NOT OK
- laptop [HDMI] → monitor: NOT OK
- Windows 11 PC with GTX 1080 → monitor: OK
- HP 15-af067sa (AMD A8-7410 APU) → monitor: OK (dual boot Windows 10 & Linux Mint, both OK)

This is slightly baffling.

I am guessing there’s something up with the HDMI connection on the monitor itself then; is it entirely possible some devices could communicate with it whilst others can’t?

Possibly depends on the error rate on the hdmi connection and the threshold of the respective device where it still accepts a connection.
I guess your monitor is on it’s way out.
