NVME SSD drive visible in lspci, but not visible in fdisk

Hello everyone,

I’m designing my own custom carrier board for Jetson Nano and I have got problem with NVME SSD drives.
Devices are always visible in lspci but not always in fdisk or lsblk. I have tested three different models of SSD drives. I achieved the best results with Samsung 970 EVO, which is almost always visible in fdisk.
Another tested disk is Patriot PS256GPM280SSDR. This drive is mounting in system very randomly. Sometimes is visible in fdisk, however it often doesn’t work properly and I don’t have acces to it.

Third tested drive is XPG from ADATA. Sometimes when I insert this drive, Jetson Nano cannot start at all.

Maybe someone has any idea, what may cause this problem? I would be grateful for each tip.

Greetings

PS. Below I attached example of logs from boot with Patriot. SSD in this try was invisible in fdisk.

Every time I see pcie issues like this it turns out to be ASPM related. I’m not saying that’s your problem but you can try adding “pcie_aspm=off” to the kernel command line and see what that does.

If what @gtj proposed doesn’t work out, some users also reported improvement in similar cases adding pci=nomsi to kernel boot args.
As you are using a custom board, not sure but you may also have a look to this topic.

If this doesn’t work, you may get rid of kernel messages with pci=noaer, but this wouldn’t fix the errors (these are reported as corrected, though), but only disable errors reporting so that it doesn’t spend time filling your kernel log files.

I do see PCIe errors, and thus the NVMe itself is not yet involved in the error. Perhaps the NVMe is good, but the PCIe side is failing. Try the above PCI options.

Thanks for your answers guys!
I read about this boot args but I don’t know where I can find them. Could you tell me where I should look for them?

They should be in /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf. Add them to the “APPEND” line.

Hi everyone,

I faced with the same problem than @automatykp. I’m using a SSD Samsung EVO970 with the M2-PCIE adaptator from Sintech ( M.2 (NGFF) nVME SSD to M2 A-Key wifi port for Samsung 960 96 [ST-M2M-AKEY] - $18.99 : Sintech Eshop!, The World of PC Adapter Card ) based on this post (https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1049706/jetson-nano/can-this-board-use-m-2-ssd-nvme/).

When I connect the SSD to the M2 connector from the standard Jetson Nano carried board, the Jetson could boot (Stuck on Nvidia Logo) or after 2 minutes. The NVMe is visible in the lspci but not in the fdisk.

I tried different approach using your advice above (boot Kernel args):

pcie_aspm : Boot randomly but the NVMe is never visible.
pci=nomsi : Always boot but the NVME is not visible (First dmesg below)
both of args : Always boot but the NVME is randomly visible (Second and 3th dmesg below)

I tried to understand the errors

[ 1.123072] nvme nvme0: Removing after probe failure status: -19
and
[ 61.982241] nvme nvme0: Identify Controller failed (-4)
[ 61.987604] nvme nvme0: Removing after probe failure status: -5

but without success. If you have some advice…

Best regards,

John

[    1.124386] nvme 0000:01:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
[    1.257692]  nvme0n1: p1
[ 7.361246] EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)

The first error shows base address register issues, and thus the fix via “pci=nomsi” makes sense (with MSI being an alternate interrupt mechanism to an address, and if the mechanism is not supported, then better to not try to use it for interrupt).

The option for pcie_aspm can be used to force on/off, but which did you choose? “Off” or “force”? I’m assuming off. See:
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/6/html/power_management_guide/aspm

In the third case where things seem to work, but not necessarily always, then a full boot log via serial console would be useful (be sure to post the log of a case where there was a failure…we already know that this can succeed sometimes). Also, once it boots with the working arguments, but still fails, show a log of this output:

sudo lspci -vvv

I use pcie_aspm=off, exactly.

The complet boot log after a failure.

I don’t see any PCIe errors in this case, but the PCIe rev. 3 has throttled back to PCIe rev. 1 speeds (8GT/s capability, 2.5GT/s status). I think at this point it becomes an NVMe issue.

I’m not very good with NVMe debug, but it shows the device is recognized here:

[    1.063669] nvme nvme0: pci function 0000:01:00.0
[    1.063714] nvme 0000:01:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)

I am wondering if this UUID is from the NVMe, and if so, where the mount point is:

[    2.073887] systemd-fstab-generator[1874]: Mount point <<b>3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378</b>> is not a valid path, ignoring.

At the end the NVMe is removed with error:

[   62.349016] nvme nvme0: I/O 22 QID 0 timeout, disable controller
[   62.355928] nvme nvme0: Identify Controller failed (-4)
[ 62.361309] nvme nvme0: Removing after probe failure status: -5

I am probably the wrong person to debug NVMe issues, but what partitions are on this device, and where are they intended to be mounted?

Hi linuxdev,

Yes, the UUID correspond to the NVMe.

$ ls -la /dev/disk/by-uuid
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  15 Nov 25 17:19 3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378 -> ../../nvme0n1p1

I check the mount point error and I find this command (findmnt(8) - Linux manual page) to check the correctness of the /etc/fstab file.

$ findmnt --verify
findmnt: /etc/fstab: parse error at line 18 -- ignored
/
   [W] unreachable source: /dev/root: No such file or directory
   [W] cannot detect on-disk filesystem type
/media/NVMe
   [W] unreachable source: /dev/disk/by-uuid/3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378: No such file or directory
   [E] cannot detect on-disk filesystem type

1 parse error, 1 error, 3 warnings

I’m using this documentation (Fstab - Community Help Wiki) to verify my fstab file and I found than I have two command mount for the same support but with different ID.

First line was made by hand and the second (with some options), was edit i think by the “Edit mount Options…” in the disk manager.

$ cat /etc/fstab

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

# These are the filesystems that are always mounted on boot, you can

# <file system> <mount point>             <type>          <options>                               <dump> <pass>
/dev/root            /                     ext4           defaults                                     0 1

UUID= <3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378> /media/nvme ext4 defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-uuid/3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378 /media/NVMe auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0

The weird think is than I modify this file based on the ubuntu documentation but Ubuntu cannot boot anymore because of different random error than I can’t understand…

For the moment, My only solution to properlly boot is to keep this fstab file like that. To be sure than my NVMe is mounted when my Jetson is running, I add a simple command line in a bash script which is launched at the start to control if the SSD is mounted, otherwise I reboot the Jetson… Robust solution but not at all clean…

test -f /media/NVMe/.file_test.txt || reboot

To answer your question, I have just one Filesystem partition on the NVMe.

Line 19 has an error:

UUID= <3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378> /media/nvme ext4 defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-uuid/3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378 /media/NVMe auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0

If you look closely at this you will see a space between “UUID= …”. No space is allowed. So far as I know the angled brackets (“<>”) should also be removed…at least in every case I’ve used UUID I’ve always gone without brackets.

Also, check the output of “lsblk -f” to verify what the mount system sees.

Hi linuxdev,

I totally agree with you than the normal entry should be :

UUID=3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378 /media/nvme ext4 defaults 0 0

But like that the system don’t boot properly…
And the “lsblk -f” command show me the attended output :

nvme0n1
└─nvme0n1p1  ext4                3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378 /media/nvme

And when the NVMe isn’t mounted, it don’t appear.

You can find the boot log with the UUID line above.
IMG_20191205_134842.tif (13.4 MB)

Is it correct that the NVMe is connected when boot fails with that line? If failure is only when the NVMe is not connected, then other options can deal with this.

You are getting i2c errors at address 0x50, and I am not positive which i2c controller is associated with HDMI, but this could possibly interfere with boot, and may or may not be related to the NVMe failure, but would need to be debugged. In one case the 0x50 address is associated with the HDMI monitor, and I am wondering, is the attached monitor directly using HDMI? Are there adapters in the cabling? Or is there possibly any optional hardware changes involved use of i2c? Even if this is an HDMI monitor, the device tree may need to change depending on your wiring…you should closely check all i2c device tree changes you might need.

A serial console log would be better since this would log everything leading up to the error, and not just the tail of the error.

NVMe is always connected.

To avoid the i2c error, I’m working without any external device.
After start up the Jetson, I’m waiting 5 minutes, I plug my HDMI screen into the Jetson and I got the log on the image in annex:

To resume :

fstab file

# <file system> 				<mount point>   <type>	<options>	<dump>	<pass>
/dev/root   					/  		ext4 	defaults 	0 	1

#Didn't boot and get the log in the annex image
UUID=3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378 	/media/nvme 	ext4 	defaults 	0 	0

#Boot everytime but mounted the NVMe randomly
UUID= <3f8579ee-4572-47ab-9763-2d3518828378> 	/media/nvme 	ext4 	defaults 	0 	0

/boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf

LABEL primary
      MENU LABEL primary kernel
      LINUX /boot/Image
      INITRD /boot/initrd
      APPEND ${cbootargs} pci=nomsi pcie_aspm=off quiet usbcore.usbfs_memory_mb=1000

The EDID is not only missing, but shows as invalid (the i2c query to HDMI has a checksum, and the checksum is failing). There is an attempt to try to provide serial console on ttyGS0, but this is failing. There is an attempt to use the NVMe, but a dependency is missing. There is a lot going wrong.

If you try to manually mount and umount the NVMe on “/media/nvme/”, does this work? You said you can mount the partition, but you used a different test location than “/mnt”. Since it isn’t NVMe which is being rejected, but instead a dependency of NVMe, it would be good to see what messages or failures you see if you manually mount or umount to “/media/nvme/”.

One thing is certain…i2c queries are going wrong. I would expect a missing EDID, but I would not expect a corrupt EDID (if no monitor or no i2c to query the result should be a missing EDID). An invalid EDID tends to mean an i2c query ran and data was returned, but the data is not from a valid monitor.

You will probably need to start flashing new device trees where the imx219 is disabled, and anything which is failing, one at a time, until something works. The lack of serial UART for serial console makes me think the device tree or hardware is quite wrong. Any custom board will require the device tree to change, and right now I’m thinking that if the hardware design is valid (and it may or may not be), then device tree was never updated. I probably can’t help much with device tree, but you should provide as much information as you can on the device tree modifications.
