Please help!! Login loop Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Dear All,

I recently managed to set up the external GPU in Ubuntu working on the laptop computer.

  • OS: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
  • Internal GPU: Quadro M1000M
  • External GPU: Quadro P4000 (Razer Core X Chroma, thunderbolt 3 connection)
  • Nvidia driver version: 430.40
  • CUDA version: 10.1 / runtime version 9.1

The issue is when I login, the screen gets black and soon after that the login screen comes back though nvidia-smi showes that both GPUs are recognized well.

Attached is Nvidia bug report.

I would very much appreciate it if experts kindly help me figure the issue out ASAP.

Thank you in advace and I look forward to hearing from you.

It’s an Optimus notebook so you actually have three gpus now, the integrated intel which drives the internal display, the Quadro M1000M and the external Quadro P4000.
Please tell me what setup you’re trying to achieve, are any external monitors connected to either the notebook or the external gpu?
For starters, please delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf, this doesn’t work with an Optimus notebook.
