Problem with Ubuntu 20.04 and Nvidia driver 470 with laptop 3080 -- nvidia-smi No devices found

I configured my laptop (gigabyte aero 15 with 3080 gpu) and had it working for a while but recently was unable to use it in linux. The drivers don’t seem to be loading, nvidia-smi is registering no devices and i’m seeing the following in dmesg:

[ 6.054416] NVRM: GPU 0000:01:00.0: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x26:0x56:1262)

I am running nvidia-driver-470, though the issue appeared on nvidia-driver-460 originally.

I have tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling, but no go, i tried disabling secure boot and reinstalling, but no go there either. I tried disabling nouveau, chaning prime-select to different settings, nothing seems to help.

The GPU works just fine in Windows 10 with the same driver version without issues, just linux seems to be struggling.

Bug report attached.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated, i’m at a loss on what else to try at this point.

An rminit error often points to a hw defect. In case of the OP, this looks like defective RAM since also the intel igpu is struggling getting dram info. Linux uses a different memory layout than Windows.
