I’m trying to install the latest Nvidia driver on linux, but on all of my tries the screen went black. I have tried to install the nvidia driver on Fedora 41, Nobara 41, PopOS _Nvidia, PopOS, Garuda, Bazzite(KDE and Gnome) and Bazzite(KDE and Gnome)_nvidia. On all of those, with differents kernels I keep getting the Black screen. My GPU is an RTX 3060.
One thing that I notice is that on Bazzite_nvidia, on my UWHD monitor the video works, but when I plug the GPU on my UWQHD monitor it does not work. I notice that the screen resolution above 2560x1440 the screen goes black and stop to work. Does Nvidia keeps old drivers releases? So I can try to install them and see if it works?
Currently I’m using Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon with the following config:

I believe that I found my problem. Still did not test, but it is related to Wayland, because on Mint and Ubuntu that uses X11 the driver works fine.
I’ve the same problem. Also Mint 22.1.
So if I disable Wayland it should work?
Interesting, I have the same problem.
I also have Mint 22.1 Cinnamon, also a Ryzen 7 5700X and a RTX 3050 (with Kernel 6.8.0-59).
I used the 550 drivers without a problem.
My screen resolution is 3840x1600.
But after I installed the 570.133.07-0ubuntu0.24.04.1 drivers and did a reboot, I can see the Mint logo for a short moment, then the screen goes black.
No obvious errors in the syslog, I just don’t get a video output.
I had to roll back to the proprietary 550 drivers.
Update:
I can confirm that this bug is triggered by a high resolution (as gustavosaibroestudos’ posting suggested).
I did the following:
on the 550 drivers I switched from my native resolution (3840x1600) to HD (1920x1080)
I then installed the 570 drivers
reboot
screen goes black / no video output (because the login screen of Mint is displayed in the native resolution)
I blindly entered my password
the Cinnamon desktop loads and switches to HD - I get a video output!
I double checked it by:
Preferences → Display
selecting 3840x1600 → Apply
no video output
I wait ~15 seconds, Mint automatically switches back to HD, again a video ouput
So something is definitely wrong with the driver.
But I wonder why more people don’t have this problem.
In the meantime I tested a lot of drivers. Result: Every driver above version 550 has this problem (e.g. 560, 565 or 570).
But I was able to fix the problem by using Display Port instead of HDMI.
Just signed up to thank you, @swift42
Same problem here. I had been trying for 2 days, changing all sorts of things that could’ve broken other stuff.
Rolled back to 550 like you said, and it worked! Lifesaver!
Hey folks,
I’m just joining the group of people for whom it doesn’t work.
I have a Dell Precision 5680, Ubuntu 24.04 (6.11.0-26-generic), RTX 4000 ADA Mobile, and a Samsung G9 with DQHD resolution. After upgrading to driver version 570.133.07, the external display connected via USB-C DP - DP went black.
Rolled back to 550 and everything works fine.
Not exactly the same but since a few nvidia driver updates some games just crash the whole thing it seems. I used to reliably be able to ALT+CTRL+1 out to another tty and kill Xorg at least. But these days not even that works most of the time. Only ssh or simply pressing the power button to shut down the machine works.
SOMETIMES i can still get a console but then my resolution is set to 640x480 and the text is so garbled up it’s almost unreadable. Not in a memory-is-broken kind of way but garbled more like really really fuzzy and blurry so you can barely make it out.
Also the startup console resolution is randomly changing from my native monitor resolution of 1440p to something like 720p each other restart. The first start of the day will ALWAYS result in no signal at all. Just like when it crashed.
These drivers were much more stable a few years ago.

Exactly this. The only way I was able to boot with the 570
driver was to use recovery mode with an earlier kernel, 6.8.0-59
vs 6.8.0-60

Same here. I am a Manjaro user. I’ve tried Cachy, Garuda and Endeavour and all have them result in a black / “stuck” display on my external monitors connected via HDMI and USB-C.
I use XFCE but have also tried Hyprland and KDE which also have issues.
It does seem that this only occurs when the desktop is extended over multiple screens. Mirrored displays seems to work.
But I’ve rolled back to an older kernel and the 550 Nvidia driver and excluded both from system updates since March.
