Ubuntu doesn't detect my second HDMI display

It happens again and I have no clue this time if it is due to broken driver. Please advise. Thanks.

I spent three days following all kinds of suggestions on internet. None of them worked. The error was nvidia.ko module not being found and being loaded. Just at an additional info my cable is USB-C to DP port on the monitor (not regular HDMI). This is the only way i figured out that fixes the problem -it rolls back to the official Ubuntu 2204 supported kernel:

1.1. Fix second display on Ubuntu (nvidia)
List installed kernels: latest Ubuntu2204 kernel is 5.15….
$ dpkg --list | grep linux-image

The recommended Ubuntu kernel was 5.15.0-33, so remove the extra new one,
which will upgrade boot options …
$ sudo apt remove linux-image-5.16.12-051612.202203021142 linux-headers-5.16.12-051612.202203021142
OR just if headers are not installed
$ sudo apt remove linux-image-unsigned-5.16.12-051612-generic
then:
$ sudo update-grub
$ sudo apt install linux-headers-5.15.0.33-generic
$ reboot
$ for x in linux-headers-5.15.0-33 linux-image-5.15.0-33-generic; do sudo apt reinstall $x; done
The above will place the nvidia.ko where it belongs ……
$ sudo update-grub
$ sudo reboot

Hello! I have the same problem. New Notebook, Kubuntu 22.04. TV on HDMI. TV is not detected! No Signal. The TV shows an image during the booting process for a short moment. When the Kubuntu logo appears the display goes to black and shows no-signal-massage. (with Windows all works fine). I have try all suggested solutions without success. :(

I spent hours pulling my hair out, even changing distros. Mint can finally recognize my external monitor. Thank you so much!

I had a look at your log file and your problem is different. Your driver is incorrectly installed.
This looks like an aborted installation or some leftover driver files from a Distro upgrade.
First indicator is
*** /var/log/nvidia-installer.log does not exist
should be there unless you automatically purge log files.
Another issue here:

Scanning kernel log files for NVIDIA kernel messages:

Lastly you also find that nouveau is installed as kernel module
Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau
which should not be the case. See my earlier post.

My recommendation is to completely remove (purge) all NVIDIA drivers and do a fresh install, using the Ubuntu Software Manager and using the certified driver coming with the Distro. And follow the instructions exactly.

Hi, I have a similar issue, I am running Ubuntu 22.04 and I can’t get my monitor to connect to my ASUS ROG laptop either. I am pretty certain I have installed the NVIDIA drivers (for my RTX 3050 card) correctly. Read through all of the answers above and tried em all, still didn’t fix my issue.

I don’t have any /var/log/nvidia-installer.log and probably it happen because the logs file in this directory are purged automatically (oldest log file in the dire is of 30 days ago). There is a different way for check what is happened during kernel update?

How proceed exactly? Remove nvidia drivers and do a fresh installation is clear and I agree with the approach but it’s a little bit generic

It works for me for the first time and then the screen does not output any image from itself, I redone these steps but not worked again.

My Laptop is LenovoUbuntu 24.04 freezes with NVIDIA profile (GTX 1650, Lenovo IdeaPad L340) — works only on Intel, HDMI not detected
