Hi everyone,
I’m loosing my mind over this one. I used a GTX1080 TI connected to 2 DELL 27" monitors (1 HDMI and 1 DP) for years without issues. The 1080 is dying so I switched it with a RTX 4060TI. Now, the second monitor is black! Funny thing, when the computer boots, the UEFI settings, the GRUB menu and the initial boot sequence are shown on the DP monitor until after the (I’m guessing), the VGA mode kicks in. At that point, the display is switch to the HDMI monitor and the DP monitor turns black.
If I recall correctly, that’s what the behavior with the 1080. After I logged in, both monitors turned on. Now, only the HDMI one is on, the DP monitor remains black. It is detected. If I take a screen capture of the whole desktop, I see the second monitor. xrandr does detect it. If I take a screen capture of the whole desktop, I can see the part that is on the second monitor but the monitor won’t show it to me. It’s like the image is stuck in the frame buffer or something.
Here’s is the current setup:
- CPU: Ryzen 7 3900X
- RAM: 64GB
- nVidia driver: 570 (from the driver manager)
- OS: Linux Mint 21.3
Here’s a few things that I did try without success:
- Installed driver 575 (from driver manager)
- Complete uninstall of nVidia driver (switch to nouveau, apt autoremove, apt purge, apt autoclean) and reinstall nVidia 570
- Upgrade to Mint 22.1 (upgrade failed had to rollback using timeshift)
- Connect both monitor on DP (both went blank after boot)
- Countless variations of xorg.conf
- Used all 3 DP on RTX 4060
- Boot with only HDMI monitor connected: Worked!
- Boot with only DP monitor connected: Worked until I reached GRUB, then turn blank.
- Boot without xorg.cfg: the HDMI becomes the second monitor, i.e. I can see what it suppose to be on the DP monitor, but the DP monitor (now the primary) remains black.
- Searches the web/forums for hours
At this point, I’m out of options (and exhausted!). Funny thing is that when I switched to “nouveau” driver, it could not recognized the card and all output were sent to the DP monitor (i.e. the HDMI was blank since it was set as a single monitor system 1024x768).
So if anyone has idea what the heck is going on I would greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks

Updated the computer the latest BIOS somehow fix the problem. I don’t quite understand why, but everything’s back to normal now. Just rebooting after the update did not work. Had to perform a complete shutdown/power off. After power it back on, everything’s when back to normal.
