565 release feedback & discussion

Select Proton games randomly freeze at startup on systems using Qtile(X11). Typically happens at the stage of company logos being shown. The image freezes, but the sound can still be heard. With some games, can also occur during shader compilation. Issue first spotted after first update from 555 to 560. Issue can be somewhat worked around by launching the game via gamescope, but it is still inconsistent and can still freeze, albeit less.
How to replicate: install Arch Linux and Qtile, install Nvidia drivers according to the archwiki, install Steam, install and run something like GTA V. Issue present on both barebones mainline Arch configurations and distros such as Arco Linux Qtile and Garuda Qtile.
Some of the games used to test the issue: GTA V, Hardspace: Shipbreaker, Lethal Company, all of which worked fine on 555 and prior.

Thank you for the answer, I’ll look on how to disable fbdev .
EDIT: I did disable fbdev, it gives me a black screen right at boot, had to set it back on.

kwin_wayland_drm: Pageflip timed out! This is a kernel bug
It seems specific to a specific kernel’s interaction with specific versions of Plasma. GPU didn’t seem to matter as a lot of reports were with AMD and Intel GPUs. I don’t have any experience with Nobara but if it has the option available you could try a different kernel.

I don’t know how outdated/up-to-date Nobara’s Plasma version is. Current stable on Arch is 6.2.3, can find it with kinfo . Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Nothing to be sorry for, actually I thank you for the effort.
Tried 3 older kernels, also updated today to 6.11.9, there is the kinfo:
Operating System: Nobara Linux 40
KDE Plasma Version: 6.2.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.8.0
Qt Version: 6.7.2
Kernel Version: 6.11.9-200.fsync.fc40.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 Ɨ AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor
Memory: 31.3 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080/PCIe/SSE2

Same here, Nioh 2 is a great game, I wanted to replay it and I had to revert back to 550 drivers since it would just freeze and crash on 565 (and 560 and 555)

linux 6.12.1 for nvidia-565
linux-lts 6.6.63 for nvidia-550
I would’ve used 6.12.1 with 550 but the dkms install just crashes, I will also include the logs from that
sudo dkms install --no-depmod nvidia/550.90.07 -k 6.12.1-arch1-1

I had kernel 6.11.9 before this, and the dkms package for 550 installed correctly, so it’s a new problem with 6.12

I have a bunch of other random issues with 565, such as KDE wayland just flickering all over the place, and KDE X11 just refuses to wake from sleep

I’m gonna stay on nvidia-550 and the lts kernel for now, since it’s by far the most stable setup

Here’s both the nvidia logs and proton logs for 565 and 550
nvidia-bug-report-550.log.gz (971.1 KB)
nvidia-bug-report-565.log.gz (1014.5 KB)
steam-1325200-nvidia-550.tar.gz (1.0 MB)
steam-1325200-nvidia-565.tar.gz (999.1 KB)
nvidia-dkms-error-make.tar.gz (13.2 KB)

I don’t get crashes… only screen freezes (switching between TTY terminals it’s usually enough), It would be nice to know when next drivers version gets released but I see no news.

Hi @Wahoo123
We have already tracked this issue via bug ID [4825128] but unfortunately I have been not able to duplicate it locally.

Could you please confirm if you have done any specific game or display settings.

Hi @amrits

I’ll give you as much info as I can:

  • The game doesn’t freeze in the menus, you have to start a mission and run around for a bit (it can sometimes take a few minutes).
  • It freezes much faster if you set the game at 120 fps instead of 30 or 60 in the graphics settings (it usually takes less than a minute on my setup)
  • Switching from fullscreen to borderless to windowed mode still freezes
  • Switching from High/Low graphics settings doesn’t seem to affect anything
  • I’m using i3 inside of KDE X11 (replacing kwin), but I’ve tested and the same thing happens with just i3 on its own
  • Any kind of wayland session is generally extremely unstable on my machine so I haven’t tested that
  • nvidia-drm.modeset=1 and fbdev=1 (I’ve also tested with fbdev=0 and the same freeze happens)
  • I’ve tested some custom command prefixes in steam, such as PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command% but nothing seems to make any difference
  • I tried gamemoderun %command%
  • I tested with multiple different versions of Proton (Proton GE, Experimental, 9.0, 8.0, 7.0) and it freezes all the same
  • I tested different setups in nvidia-settings (running my monitor at 60Hz instead of 240Hz, turning on/off vsync), no difference
  • if I run sudo dmesg | grep -i nvidia I get this error: [drm:drm_new_set_master] *ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00000800] Failed to grab modeset ownership, but I also see this error with the 550 driver and the game runs fine
  • I’m using an RTX 2070 Super from EVGA plugged into display port (I haven’t tried switching to HDMI but I doubt that would make a difference)
  • GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="udev.log_priority=3 acpi_enforce_resources=lax amd_pstate=guided"
  • I’m pretty sure I didn’t change anything in my BIOS settings

I can’t really think of anything else

Here’s my full hardware info in case it’s relevant (it’s showing the 550 drivers because I downgraded)

There is an issue being tracked for gamescope similar to the freezing mentioned here.

Setting VKD3D_DISABLE_EXTENSIONS=VK_KHR_present_wait seems to fix the issue, at least for VKD3D/DX12 games.

New issue occuring since kernel 6.12 release, with both the open and closed drivers. I use fbdev disabled due to this issue I mentioned previously: NVidia fbdev does not use correct screen resolution / primary monitor on multi monitor setups

Using fbdev disabled causes an extra card to now show in /dev/dri, here is an example:

you can see card0 is now correlated to a ā€œsimple framebufferā€ card, which takes priority over card1 which is my discrete gpu rtx 3070.

Having this card0 here causes a few problems, one being that some compositors won’t launch, and others will be forced software rendering (hyprland for instance)

I can get around the issue on hyprland by using this environment variable : env = AQ_DRM_DEVICES,/dev/dri/card1

this asks aquamarine (a backend for hyprland) to use card1 instead of the default card0, allowing my compositor and gpu to work correctly again.

This could be solved by fixing my original issue linked above, then I could use fbdev freely and not come across this issue.

Are you on Arch? If so, the patch to disable the simpledrm device was dropped for kernel 6.12.

I filed an issue on Arch GitLab, and included a couple of workarounds for now.

Hello @amrits. Were you able to replicate my Qtile-specific issue? Over here 565 release feedback & discussion - #248 by ashrynne

Display modes above 2560x1440p@120hz with HDR enabled cause flickering/corruption within gamescope-session This is still an issue and we have heard no word yet on a fix

WARNING: the video clip has strobing lights

Yes, Gamescope-session (or gamescope -e -f -h 2160 -w 7680 -r 120 --hdr-enabled --mangoapp -- steam -steamdeck -steamos3 -steampal -gamepadui from TTY) still has massive flickering whenever HDR is enabled. It works fine up until the point of enabling HDR, but after that point it turns into the video above.

Thanks for this info, I see now that you can blacklist it when building the kernel, however I’m using prebuilt kernels from arch repo and I don’t want to build my own, so I will continue to use my workaround for now as it works for my main compositor of choice (Hyprland)

no acknowledgement for this post either: 565 release feedback & discussion - #243 by faz

nvidia team, what is going on? I understand the issues take a while to fix and I appreciate your time for doing so and making the linux driver better for us. However there seems to be no interaction from anyone on the nvidia team for all of these issues. Could I please be provided with the internal bug report IDs?

Meanwhile I spend my time ctrl + alt + f3/f2 because screens randomly freeze. No Eta for new drivers, old ones are a mess or good but totally unsafe (560). I don’t like to complain really, but in this situation where so many issues are present silence shouldn’t be an option. Thank you very much on my side too for your work at nvidia, but be a lil more vocal please.

I don’t think the 560 drivers are a security concern if you’re the only user on the system.
I wouldn’t use them on production or work computers tho’.

After updating to 565 beta, when I open Discord (Vesktop) the boot logo gets rendered as a black box, it is running natively on Wayland
