Blank virtual terminals when switching with Ctrl-Alt-Fn

On workstations running CentOS 7.9 with Nvidia 510 series driver (510.73.05), using Ctrl-Alt-Fn (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F4) to switch virtual terminal, would give a usable console login prompt

However, when upgrading to a more recent driver series, when switching virtual terminals gives a blank screen - but if you blindly type in your username/password on one of these virtual terminals, you do get logged in - i.e. the login prompt is there, but not visible

Not sure which series driver this started happening, but it happens at least with 525 series drivers and above

I don’t think the issue is Nvidia hardware specific - I’ve seen this problem with Quadro P4000 and RTX A5000 GPUs

Is this a known issue - or is there something in need to enable with newer drivers to make the virtual terminals visible ?

It looks like this only happens with particular workstations - in our case ‘Dell Precision 5820 Tower’ workstations - and only when they had been installed using the legacy BIOS - switching to EFI and reinstalling and the problem goes away …

We tried upgrading to the latest available BIOS, but this made no difference in legacy BIOS mode. Only switching to using EFI ‘fixed’ the issue
