Comparing SM (Subnet Manager) features on MQM8700 IB Switch and on UFM

Understanding the benefits of UFM with integrated monitoring views of the Switch Devices/Cables/HCA, etc. However, we are having hard time to understand the advantages of the SM itself while running on UFM. What are the additional features of the SM while running on UFM comparing the SM running on switch itself besides having more hardware resources while running UFM on the UFM appliance or server specifically for UFM, especially when UFM requires SM to be running on the UFM itself, but not on switch.

Please help to advise.
Thanks a lot.

Hi Poshanc,

SM can run on a managed switch, a server, or UFM.

OpenSM running on a server was designed to meet the common case usage on clusters with up to a few hundred nodes. No additional licensing is required.

The NVIDIA UFM is a set of WbeUI-based platforms for data center networking management. The UFM solution provides enhanced, real-time network telemetry with AI-powered cyber intelligence and analytics to support scale-out InfiniBand data centers.
UFM uses OpenSM to discover and configure all the InfiniBand fabric devices and to enable traffic flow throughout the fabric. Additional licensing is required.

Thanks,
Yuying

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

When “OpenSM running on a server was designed to meet the common case usage on clusters with up to a few hundred nodes. No additional licensing is required.” and “UFM uses OpenSM”, for the column with title “Server (MLNX_OFED)”, does that mean OpenSM can also be running on the server without UFM ?

How would the UFM license impact the availability of the IB network? when the UFM license is expired, if SM on UFM would not be operational, either?

Thanks.

Poshan.
