A partner of ours is being asked by their customers how to create a digital twin of existing buildings without any exisiting CAD / BIM data (interiors and exteriors) and then to have users immsere themselves in our AR glasses.
What are some of the best exisiting software / hardware solutions out there for 3D / LIDAR scanning?
I cannot be too specific here, since this forum is just for Omniverse, but it’s hard to build a digital twin without CAD. The point of a digital twin is that you have CAD data to work with. If not you can create it from scratch or do a lidar scan. However a lidar scan just gets you something you can walk around. That is just a virtual tour. You need a lot more data for a true digital twin. Energy consumption, electrical diagrams, heat and AC systems, automatic and intelligent systems, security. The list goes on and on.
Does the client have the buildings CAD data? How old is the building? Any building in the last 10 years should have digital CAD data on file. You can ask the client for the architectural plans and go from there.
There are services that use lidar to convert to CAD data, but you would have to find them. I cannot recommend one here.
Well, my Nvidia partner manager suggested that I post in this forum when I asked the question … so just following up on her suggestion.
As for our particular customer’s need - perhaps I mischaracterized the need, but that is all I want from a digital twin - the ability for a virtual tour.
There are a lot of buildings out there that are older than 10 years old. Just because CAD data exists, doesn’t mean one might have access to that CAD data.
For interiors, where photogrammetry or NeRFs may be a bit too “noisy”, we have used pictures, measurements, and software like Maya or Blender. I bit more time consuming, but nice and clean.
