Do i really need to update Jetpack on my board ? [Jetson Orin AGX 32Gb]

My board is the Jetson Orin AGX 32Gb,
It came loaded with Jetpack 5.1.5 (Ubuntu 20.04 - L4T 35.6.2)

i am questioning myself about updating and flashing my board to get some extra features…
i will be using this device to run and train LLMs, and to run comfyUI workflows to generate images via docker containers.

Do i really need to update and flash my board ?
(with all the risks to get errors and problems… when the hardware is actually working fine)

Thank you for your answer

Based on the provided context, I’ll address your concerns and questions about updating and flashing your Jetson Orin AGX 32Gb board.

Current Setup:
Your board is currently running Jetpack 5.1.5, Ubuntu 20.04, and L4T 35.62. This setup is likely stable and working fine for your current use case.

Reasons to Update and Flash:
You’re considering updating and flashing your board to get extra features, specifically for running and training Large Language Models (LLMs) and ComfyUI workflows to generate images via Docker containers.

Risks and Considerations:
Updating and flashing your board can introduce risks, such as:

  1. Errors and problems during the update process.
  2. Potential compatibility issues with your existing software and workflows.
  3. Possibility of bricking your board (although this is rare).

Do You Really Need to Update and Flash?
Considering your current setup is working fine, you might not need to update and flash your board immediately. However, if you want to take advantage of new features, improvements, or bug fixes that might benefit your use case, updating and flashing might be a good idea.

Comparison with Newer Versions:
Newer versions of Jetpack, L4T, and Ubuntu might offer:

  1. Improved performance and efficiency for LLMs and ComfyUI workflows.
  2. Enhanced security features and bug fixes.
  3. New features and tools that might be useful for your specific use case.

Recommendation:
Before updating and flashing your board, consider the following:

  1. Check the release notes and documentation for the newer versions to see if they address any specific issues or features you’re interested in.
  2. Evaluate the potential benefits and risks of updating and flashing your board.
  3. If you decide to update and flash, make sure to follow the official instructions and take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of errors or problems.

Alternative Options:
If you’re not comfortable with updating and flashing your board, you could consider:

  1. Using a separate board or device for testing and development, to minimize the risk of disrupting your current setup.
  2. Exploring alternative solutions or workarounds that don’t require updating and flashing your board.

In conclusion, while updating and flashing your board can offer benefits, it’s essential to weigh the potential risks and consider your specific use case before making a decision. If you do decide to update and flash, make sure to follow the official instructions and take necessary precautions.

If you want to use L4T R36.x (JetPack 6.x), then you must flash it.

If you run JetPack/SDK Manager on a host PC, and deselect flash and any install to host PC (it isn’t obvious, but you can uncheck those things), then any optional software addition is via ssh to a fully booted Jetson and there is no need for recovery mode (at that point it isn’t flashing; a normal flash automatically reboots the Jetson for this optional software install anyway).
