E-con Systems See3CAM_CU135M freezing on Jetson Orin Nano

Hi everyone!

We are currently fighting random “freezing” of e-con Systems See3CAM_CU135M camera when it is connected to Jetson Orin Nano Dev Kit and we would appreciate any help in debugging this issue!
You can find below the information about our system, more detailed description of this freezing behavior and results of our initial troubleshooting.

System Description:
We are developing a device which core functionality is to capture a sequence of high-resolution images and subsequently post-process it. We need to capture the images with the maximum FPS allowed by the camera and we can’t afford any freezing during the operation.

Jetson Orin Nano Dev Kit:

  • L4T 36.4.3
  • JetPack 6.2 (however, this issue was on earlier SDK versions as well)

e-con Systems See3CAM_CU135M:

  • Frame parameters: 4200x3120 px, 8-bit
  • Connected as USB3.1 device: 20 FPS max, i.e. 2 Gbps bandwidth is required; typical power consumption specified by e-con Systems is 1.2 W
  • Connected as USB2.0 device - 2 FPS max, typical power consumption is 0.8 W
  • Frame readout: free-run camera mode, readout with Python OpenCV, V4L2 API

No other peripheral devices are connected to USB ports.

Freezing behavior:
While used as an USB3.1 device on Jetson Orin Nano, the camera connects and disconnects during operation, for example, during subsequent readout of 100 frames in camera free-run mode. The camera has an LED status indicator which goes from “red” (not in operation) to “yellow” (in operation) several times during data acquisition.

Such behavior is not present while connected to Jetson Nano (from which we are currently migrating) and on both Jetson devices in USB2.0 mode.

Troubleshooting attempts

  • Following this topic, we tested See3CAM_CU135M camera on both USB-A and USB-C ports of Jetson Orin Nano. The freezing was observed on all available ports on two different Orin Nano Dev Kits.

  • Following several previous topics (e.g. this and this), we tried connecting the camera to a USB hub with external power supply (Conceptronic HUBBIES20GP) but it didn’t fix the problem.

  • We used readily available USB tester which only supports USB2.0 communication, therefore, it is only partially helpful for this issue. We received the following readings for available devices:
    - Jetson Nano: V = 5.10 V, I = 900-1000 mA, P = 0.50 mW
    - Jetson Orin: V = 5.08 V, I = 700 mA, P = 0.35 mW
    - Jetson Orin + USB hub: V = 5.20 V, I = 600-700 mA, P = 0.37 mW
    which still doesn’t correspond to the expected 0.8 W power consumption in the USB2.0 mode.
    Edit: most probably 0.5 mW Nano vs 0.8 mW camera specs power discrepancy can be attributed to the idle power consumption of the USB tester.

  • Following this topic, we also disabled autosuspend and increased allocated memory with no positive results.

At the moment, we have very much exhausted our troubleshooting ideas and would be glad to receive any input from the NVIDIA Support Team or community members!
