The 50 series GPUs do support Ubuntu.
Putting them on a PCIe 3.0 server board which was deprecated 5 years ago is not a good idea. It might work or it might not. The issue is that the required minimum Linux kernel verison to support the 50 series GPU might be too new for anything else on that MB.
