GPU fails to work <solved>

Hello dear folks.

The GPU fails to engage when I am running applications on my system. Instead it defaults to llvmpipe.

With the (deprecated) xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver I get better performance, but a lot less stability.

Edit: That was unclear - the open source driver works with the actual GPU, but it does crash (a lot).

What can I do?

Edit: I did read threads with similar issues, but none of the solutions I came across (yet) worked for me.
I learned a lot, but my issue remains.

Todays crop of updates included some that were named “nvidia” and after installing those the proprietary driver recognizes my GPU.
