GPU Memory Full

I use 2 computers with OV. One has a 3090 and the other has dual A6000s. In both computers the GPU memory will fill up, sometimes with a simple scene. I create a new project and the GPU memory is still full. I have to reboot to free up GPU memory.

I find it hard to use Composer with the issues I have with the GPU memory. Are GPU memory issues common? I am using the Enterprise version of OV.

That seems very strange. Composer does require a lot of memory, but it should not “fill up” without massive massive scenes. I have had 100GB of raw data on a Geforce 3090. Now obviously the 3090 has 24GB ram, while the A6000 has 48GB. So you should be way better off with the A6000. However, again, it should not fill up so easily. Are you leaving the program running over night or something ? It has been know to have small runtime memory leaks, where you would leave it 24 hrs and the vram usage would creep up. But no, it should not be that bad of a problem. I have used it for many hours and not filled the ram.

Are you using IRAY / Accurate mode ? That would double your vram usage. It takes a lot of vram all by itself. If so, maybe. But if not, and you are just using realtime and Path tracing it should be fairly stable.

My advice is to not restart your whole computer, but just restart the app. If that does not give you all of your vram back, then there is a strange problem.

Restarting composer always frees the memory.

I will try to document exact steps on one of the computers with a sample scene, if I can get repeated failures. I know for certain that my scene is not big enough to fill the memory. I think I have seen failures in all render modes.

I will do some testing tomorrow.

What do you mean by “failures” ? You mean the app is actually crashing from being out of GPU memory ?
