How can I change a GPIO to Input / Output

Hi,
i am currently struggling around with trying to set the State of GPIOs as Input or Output on the Nvidia Jetson Nano, As seen here in another forum post of mine : GPIO Interrupt not working on Jetpack 6

Current Situation is: From the Jetson Orin Nano out of the box, with libgpiod and Python, i can only use GPIOs predefined as as Input-Pins, and only Pins predefined as Output as Output Pins. On the Jetson Nano, which I used prior to the Orin Nano, i did not had to make changes to the Device Tree to get Input Signals on my GPIO Pins (also without using sysfs).

In the Post I referred to above, Moderator pointed out, that I need to set the desired Function (Input / Output) by the Pinmux Spreadsheet. As far as i have read into it, applying the generated .dtsi Files generated by this Tool requires building a kernel from source.

Is it really the case, that on a State-of-the-Art embedded device, that is said to compete with other platforms, I have to compile a whole kernel just to use some GPIOs as Input or Output? Or are there other options (I am aware of the dynamically changing of the GPIO States by Register Access, but this is not a Option for my application)?
Futhermore, it is really confusing on how to apply the generated Pinmux .dsti Files for Kernel Building. If someone could guide me thru this process, i would be very grateful

Thanks and Best Regards
Tim

pinmux settings have nothing to do with kernel building…
From where did you get such information?

NO.
Building kernel is not required at all.

YES, it is.
It’s just that those changes will get lost after reboot.

Hi DaveYYY,

Thank you for your answer. I am sorry, apperently, i miss understood the guide for using the Pinmux. But I still dont really understand how to use the Pinmux Spreadsheet.

My Assumption was:

  • Downloading Kernel Source, Root File System, …
  • Putting the generated Pinmux .dtsi Files in the correct directories
  • Building the Kernel
  • Loading the new Kernel on to the Jetson Orin Nano

Can you maybe shortly explain to me the correct procedure. For this Process, do I have to download The kernel source, rfs, … on to my Jetson and run the Flashing Script from there or do i have to do this on a Host System? Is the SDK Manager involved in this?

Sorry for my bad understanding, i am new to Arm-based embedded Linux systems.

Thank you and best regards,
Tim

https://docs.nvidia.com/jetson/archives/r36.3/DeveloperGuide/IN/QuickStart.html

$ tar xf ${L4T_RELEASE_PACKAGE}
$ sudo tar xpf ${SAMPLE_FS_PACKAGE} -C Linux_for_Tegra/rootfs/
$ cd Linux_for_Tegra/
$ sudo ./tools/l4t_flash_prerequisites.sh
$ sudo ./apply_binaries.sh

This is all you need aside from configuring pinmux settings.
Building kernel is not required at all if you just want to change some GPIO directions.

An x86 Ubuntu host PC is required.
SDK Manager is optional as flashing manually with scripts does the same work.

Thank you

And where in to downloaded files to I have to put the dtsi files before performing the flashing?

Best regards
Tim

Thank you for the links,

But how does this encorperates the Pinmux changes, the guide you referred to does not explain this? Is it enough, to generate a .cfg file from the .dsti using the Python Script, or do I have to place the .dtsi Files in the correct directories on the kernel

Furthermore, Is this process really requiring a Ubuntu Host, or is this also possible to get to work on a Debian System?

Thanks,
Tim

I have told you this in your previous post…
https://docs.nvidia.com/jetson/archives/r36.3/DeveloperGuide/HR/JetsonModuleAdaptationAndBringUp/JetsonAgxOrinSeries.html#mb1-configuration-changes
Did you ever read it?

We have never tested on Debian, but if you have all required packages listed in Linux_for_Tegra/tools/l4t_flash_prerequisites.sh, then Debian should also theoretically do it.
A Ubuntu docker is the better way.

Thank your for your answer.

I was confused by the different Procedures that are shown in different Guides. Especially when it comes to generating this .cfg file, which is stated in some Guides. Appearently this is not needed. I am currently trying to follow along the Guide you supplied on a Ubuntu VM.

Best regards,
Tim

You will get into a lot of issues flashing with VM.
If you are on Linux but not Ubuntu, use Docker, please.

Hi DaveYYY,

Thank you for advising me not to use a VM, but a docker instead. I was succesfull flashing to Jetson Orin Nano from a Ubuntu Docker Container. Now I tried to repeat the process because i wanted to perform additional changes and its not working anymore. Here is the log of the flashing command:

saving flash command in flashcmd.txt

*** no-flash flag enabled. Exiting now... ***

User can run above saved command in factory environment without
providing pkc and sbk keys to flash a device

Example:

    $ cd bootloader
    $ sudo bash ./flashcmd.txt

Error: /data/Linux_for_Tegra/bootloader/signed/flash.idx is not found
Error: failed to relocate images to /data/Linux_for_Tegra/tools/kernel_flash/images
Cleaning up...

As you can see, there are many Warnings stating that Files dont exit and that “no flash flag is enabled” Can you help me with this?

Best regards
Tim

Are you sure the same set of pimux setting works for the first time?

Hi DaveYYY,

Yes, i could validate the Pinmux changes. I changed both CAM_PWDN to Inputs (Default: Output) and checked there state with the gpioinfo command. After Flashing, they where set as Inputs. Furthermore, i did not get those error messages at the First Flashing.

Best regards,
Tim

I am curious about the file Orin-awr-pinmux_cpp.dts, which is called in this section you referred to. When does this get created. Do i need to add my Pinmux Files right after extracting the tar Files or after the executing the l4t_flash_prerequisites.sh and apply_binaries.sh Scripts?

I think it should make no difference.
Maybe you can try deleting the whole BSP, and apply your changes to pinmux again.

Okay, i am gonna try to go threw this process once again from the beginning.
But i am still curious about pinmux_cpp.dts file

I think I have problems getting the apply_binaries Script to work.

This is the log of the script:
