Our customer Orin nx carrier board which uses HDMI to display.
We have some compatibility issues with some monitors.
Is it possible to limit the HDMI resolution under 3840x2160/60 Hz ?
For example , if a monitor supports 120Hz and 144Hz for 3840x2160.
How to set Orin nx not support these two frequencies, and limit it support 60 Hz for 3840x2160 only?

To address the compatibility issues with some monitors and limit the HDMI resolution to 3840x2160 at 60Hz, you can explore the following options:
- EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) manipulation: The EDID is a data structure that contains information about the display’s capabilities, including supported resolutions and refresh rates. You can try modifying the EDID to limit the supported resolutions and refresh rates. This can be done by creating a custom EDID file that only includes the desired resolution and refresh rate (3840x2160 at 60Hz). You can then load this custom EDID file into the Jetson Orin NX module.
- HDMI mode setting: You can try setting the HDMI mode to a specific resolution and refresh rate using the
tvservicecommand-line tool. For example, you can use the following command to set the HDMI mode to 3840x2160 at 60Hz:
tvservice -e "CEA=16:9,3840,2160,60"
This will set the HDMI mode to 3840x2160 at 60Hz, but it may not prevent the monitor from trying to use higher refresh rates if it supports them.
3. Kernel parameter modification: You can try modifying the kernel parameters to limit the HDMI resolution and refresh rate. For example, you can add the following parameter to the kernel command line:
video=HDMI-A-1:3840x2160@60
This will set the HDMI resolution to 3840x2160 at 60Hz, but it may not prevent the monitor from trying to use higher refresh rates if it supports them.
4. Device tree modification: You can try modifying the device tree to limit the HDMI resolution and refresh rate. For example, you can modify the tegra-hdmi.dtsi file to include the following node:
hdmi {
resolution = <3840 2160 60>;
};
This will set the HDMI resolution to 3840x2160 at 60Hz, but it may not prevent the monitor from trying to use higher refresh rates if it supports them.
It’s worth noting that these methods may not work for all monitors, and you may need to try a combination of these methods to achieve the desired result.
In comparison to the Jetson Orin Nano series, the Jetson Orin NX series has similar HDMI capabilities, but the specific implementation and configuration may differ. Therefore, the above methods may need to be adapted or modified to work with the Jetson Orin NX series.
In terms of the HDMI-IN connector, the Jetson Orin NX series supports HDMI 2.0b input (up to 4Kp60), which is similar to the Jetson Orin Nano series. However, the specific HDMI mode setting and EDID manipulation may differ between the two series.
In summary, to limit the HDMI resolution to 3840x2160 at 60Hz on the Jetson Orin NX series, you can try modifying the EDID, HDMI mode setting, kernel parameters, or device tree. However, the specific implementation and configuration may differ from the Jetson Orin Nano series, and you may need to try a combination of these methods to achieve the desired result.

1.The tvservice seems used on Raspberry, how could I install the tvervice on Orin nx device ?
2.I add the “video=HDMI-A-1:3840x2160@60” to the /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf, but display setting does not change to 3840x2160@60 after reboot. What are the procedures to add the video setting to kernel parameter ?
3.Which device tree file should I modify for the hdmi configuration for Orin Nx 16G ?
HI,
Ideally we don’t suggest to force any frequency here because a mode should be picked after reading a EDID. For example, if you pick a 1080p mode but the actual monitor does not support it, then it would lead to problem.
Orin NX does not support 4Kp120 since it is beyond HDMI 2.0. If the TV has 4Kp60 and 4Kp120, we would expect 4Kp60 to be picked.
Does Orin nx and Orin nano just support to HDMI 2.0 ?
From the page 1 of Datasheet(Jetson_Orin_NX_DS-10712-001_v1.0.pdf), display controller supports to HDMI2.1
Is there any way to disalbe some configurations of EDID ?
For example, if monitor supports 4Kp120 and p144, how to let user can’t select these two frequencies since our carrier board does not support it ?
Orin AGX/NX/Nano HDMI only support to 2.0 because of software limitation.
Please always read software feature in the developer guide instead of datasheet.
Are you sure you really see 4k@120 fps in the xrandr when you use such monitor?
From the Developer Guide of R36.4.4, HDMI supports 2.0 only.
When I use Orin nx 16G on Xavier nx carrier board, and flash JetPack_6.2.1_Linux_JETSON_ORIN_NX_TARGETS(R36.4.4) with p3509-a02-p3767-0000.conf.
I can see the 3860x2160p120 with or without VRR by using Corsair 32UHD144 monitor.
When I set to 120 with VRR, the analyzer gets the freqency is 48 which is the lowest of the VRR.
When I set to 120 without VRR, the analyzer gets the freqency is 120.
I can see the 120 and 144 of the frequency in the Ubuntu display setting.
Since the SW limitation is HDMI 2.0 of Orin NX, is there any way to let ubuntu not list 120 and 144 in display of Settings app ?
I remember a old post as this. Could you try it?
Just curious, could you share us the xorg log or xrndr instead of the GUI?
I change the max-rate-maxn of clock@nvdisplay_disp to 1191000000, then I get a additional 119 Hz from display setting.

Hi James,
I just checked. You don’t need to change anything for rel-36.4.4. Everything is already there.
We need to do some further check for this issue.
Could you share the xorg log and xrandr based on original image (without any BPMP change)?
The log files without BPMP change.

Hi James,
What is the resolution and fps you are using when dumping out this log?
Using a valid mode should give out a result like below. Could you confirm if this would happen on your side?
[ 26.892] (–) NVIDIA(GPU-0): LG Electronics LG ULTRAWIDE (DFP-0): connected
[ 26.892] (–) NVIDIA(GPU-0): LG Electronics LG ULTRAWIDE (DFP-0): Internal TMDS
[ 26.892] (–) NVIDIA(GPU-0): LG Electronics LG ULTRAWIDE (DFP-0): 600.0 MHz maximum pixel clock
Hi James,
不知道用中文講會不會清楚一點. 能請你把VPR關閉之後在4k@60的狀況下給我們你的xrandr 跟xorg log嗎
Could you share the info we need?
Hi Wayne,
Ubuntu Settings.Display 是設 3840x2160p60, 但是因為有閞啟 “AMD FreeSync Premium” ,
所以螢幕是 3840x2160p48.
