Jetson AGX Xavier self rebooting

Greetings,

A couple of weeks ago I got myself an Jetson AGX Xavier developer kit and noticed it was rebooting, at least once a day.

It is pretty annoying so I “dmesg --follow” and got this (CPU 0 issue):

Thank you for your input but I do not have a computer with a serial port so what other method could I use to get the log that matters?
The partial log above was printed in a ssh session.

If this is the dev kit, then as you look at the 40-pin header with the USB-C on the right, you will be able to see a micro-OTG USB port on the left. The supplied micro-B USB cable could be connected to your host PC without the need for any special adapter.

If this is not a dev kit, but the carrier supports the micro-OTG USB port, then you can probably do the same with that alternate carrier board. Minicom or gtkterm could talk through that serial connection and get a boot log.

However, the actual reboot does not occur immediately after this. Quite a bit of time follows, and then I see this (which might or might not be related to the above failure…logs do not make this clear):

I would not be surprised if this is a bug in power savings versus running, especially related to the GPU going in or out of a power savings mode, but this would be pure speculation.

Someone from NVIDIA may have a specific test based on your logs (which are very useful from your last post and add a lot of new information). You will likely need to provide the exact release flashed to the Xavier.

The Devkit has been up for 8 hours straight !!!

What changed? I increased the power supply input voltage to 125 Volts. I guess that, as linuxdev determined, there is a power issue.

It there a way to log the devkit voltage? There might be some low level C function to extract it from some registry? Where can I find the information about that?

This is not supported on any Jetson. VGA will not provide the EDID data (even if you found a VGA monitor with EDID passthrough it will be the wrong version). You will need to remove any VGA adapter and use an actual HDMI (or DisplayPort through HDMI…DisplayPort will provide EDID) monitor. This would not actually cause a reboot by itself, but would cause video failure. When VGA works it is due to a default setting or a previous EDID value being compatible with the VGA monitor…pure luck.

Someone else may have a way to use “/sys” for monitoring voltages.

There will be two Tegra display controllers, one would be empty, but the other, if it contains valid EDID, may indicate the VGA monitor can actually work. It would be the first I’ve heard of (I have seen other VGA monitors with pass-through, but they were using older protocols which never parsed…but for all I know the different L4T releases might have evolved).

Perhaps a VGA monitor does not itself support power savings modes in the same way as HDMI? Don’t know. If you have a true HDMI monitor, and can get a serial console log with that connected instead of the VGA pass-through, then you could at least eliminate that as the cause.

As you can see, here at the end, it is still powering down the non-existent display. I am starting to wonder if the Devkit has an issue of some kind. How will I be able to run any deep learning if it keeps rebooting?

I have similar problem. Not sure what causing it. I was suspecting:

  1. [voltage sensitivity] my outlet voltage swing is too big (from AGX point of view, none of computer ever complaint about my wall outlet voltage), so your 125V is a “good” move.
  2. [thermal sensitivity] GPU overheating, I had been experiencing whenever tegrastats log showing GPU temperature > 45C, serial console log would show nvgpu_set_error_notifier_locked:137 [ERR] (although might need further validation, but it seems quite repeatable in my unit)
  3. [s/w stack] I was using NoMachine for remote client, because AGX is keep rebooting, I was dare not use it anymore, so I keep my AGX bare minimum in terms of s/w stack and self rebooting still happens…

I am still try to nail down what really causing this self rebooting issue and hope someone can share their experience to demonstrate this AGX can really run at temperature -25C to 80C with the 65W power supply without a hiccup.

(Saddly to say, my experience so far showing my AGX Xavier unit can only run with the 65W power supply plug into a 600 W line conditioner (to guarantee minimum voltage swing) at GPU temperature < 45C… this is far away from a real product requirements of any real world situation.)

Could GPU’s packaging have a weak heat transfer to the radiator ?
I have tried running the devkit with a 6 inch fan at full speed 2 inches away. The reboots were still happening every couple of hours.

From now on, I will be logging tegrastats to analyse after the next reboot.

This says that the EDID was not read, or if it was read, parsing failed. Regardless of whether your other test shows an EDID or not, the system does not see it in any usable way.

However, your test showing the reboot error with no monitor attached says a lot. I see a kernel failure in ksoftirqd, which would one of the kernel drivers or features not directly associated with hardware (hardware could indirectly result in the task ksoftirqd was trying to run). The actual debug does not specifically say what the problem was, but there are some indications that the issue is related to networking:

If you have made any sort of network customization, or are doing anything special relative to networking (e.g., high network load or unusual protocols), then you might want to provide some details (or confirm there is nothing unusual about network use). If you are using a public network with anyone able to reach the interface, versus being behind a router in a controlled environment, then that too might be useful information.

Another data point might resonance your hypothesis: couple month ago, I install a 1TB M2.SSD in the unit, and experience more frequent self rebooting to a point is not usable anymore, then I checked the info about the M2 heat profile which can easily goes up to more than 100C during the high bandwidth read/write, and then I decided to remove M2 from my unit. Then the unit has less chance of self rebooting (at least I can develop some s/w without hiccup in between…; ) => although the M2 is not in the same PCB with GPU, but it might heat up the environment to impact the unit thermal tolerance and this might imply the unit is very sensitive to thermal fluctuation

Most of the other issues you mention (e.g., overheating or unstable power voltage) would cause an issue for any computer, although Jetsons tend to be more sensitive on that topic. However, I have to wonder if NoMachine is involved in the issues for @simon.glet .

In particular, if @simon.glet is also using NoMachine, then perhaps there is some relation since his ksoftirqd failure was network related.

This would make sense, but the original issue does appear to be related to network. However, if an external source heated up networking chipsets, then perhaps it is related (that’s a very big leap in imagination, so I still suspect the network issue and heat are separate, but the two could occur at the same time and make figuring it out quite difficult).

My network is pretty limited with the setup is the following:
2 computers

  • Jetson AGX DevKit -> wired
  • Workstation -> wired/wifi

are connected to:

Netgear_AC1200_R6120 Wifi router -> Router’s “Internet” connector -> Ununtu 18.04 LTS acting as a Wifi bridge -> Wifi -> Internet Fiber connected Wifi router.

I doubt anyone is messing with the Jetson.

Assuming the router is not in “bridging” mode, then I would agree. You used the “bridge” term, and I think this is likely just language semantics, but can you verify that the world outside of the router cannot initial connections directly to the Jetson? Basically, if the Jetson must originate connections, then it is not in bridging mode.

Also, is there much network traffic at the time of reboot?
