Jetson Nano Dev Kit USB Fail

Hello,

I’m having problems with the USB ports on the Jetson Nano, I thought it might be a hardware failure, but when I tried it on another model the same thing happened to me. When I tried a USB camera, all the USB ports stopped working. I tried that camera on a Raspberry Pi, a PC with Windows, and it works without problems. It’s also a small camera with very low power consumption.

I tried with an OS on a different micro SD, the problem continues.
I tried on two Jetson Nano, on one of them it worked for a while and suddenly stopped working, when I tried on the second one it failed to connect the camera.
The USBs don’t give power either, I’ve tried different USB devices like card readers and the LED doesn’t turn on either.

I thought the problem could be with the camera having a fault and breaking the USB ports on the Jetson, but that camera works on both a smartphone and a Windows PC without problem.

If I run: lsusb, I get this:

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I don’t know what else I can check, I’ve checked the forum looking for solutions and I haven’t found any either.

Thanks for the help, best regards.
Adrian

Some cameras can take significant power, and if the Jetson itself is powered via USB and not via a power brick, then there isn’t that much power left over for the camera. To test could use try an externally powered HUB? This would cause power to be eliminated from what might go wrong.

Also, if you monitor “dmesg --follow”, and you plug in some lower powered common device (e.g., a mouse or keyboard), does anything show up? Be careful to not use the micro-OTG connector since this is not a host port.

Hello, thanks for the answer.

With “dmesg --follow ” the result is:

I have tried connecting keyboards, mouse and other low-consumption USBs that have LED indicators when they are connected and they do not turn on.

I have ordered a HUB with external power to check if it works, although I do not know if it will be the solution for these 2 jetson nano.

What seems strange to me is that I had already had the Jetson nano working without problems with two of these USB cameras that have a maximum consumption of 300mA and now suddenly the USBs stop working, I tried on another jetson nano that I had and suddenly the USBs have also stopped working.

Logic tells me that it could be one of the cameras that is defective and damages the USBs, but on a smartphone and a PC they work perfectly.

In the case that it is damaged could it be the carrier board? Or could the Jetson Nano module also be damaged? I would also like to know if there are any reports of similar problems with USB and if there are any known weaknesses for future Jetson Nanos, as I want to make it a reliable system.

Thanks for the help, best regards.
Adrian

Which line is the first line occurring as a result of plug-in? You can use the timestamps to name the line.

There is circuitry which limits current output, and so even if the cameras were defective, then this should not harm the Jetson (unplugging and probably rebooting would solve that issue for the non-defective cameras to work again). Your test to show the cameras work on other computers also agrees with the idea that the cameras themselves are not at fault. I’m still interested in the powered USB HUB result since power consumption can be an issue even when all hardware is ok.

If there is a hardware issue, then carrier boards are the issue far more often than are modules. A software issue which will look like a hardware issue is incorrect firmware (the device tree). Sometimes the cable itself is an issue, especially long cables. This leads to a very important question: Are you using NVIDIA’s developer kit, or are you using a third party carrier board with an NVIDIA module?

Also, which release of software are you using? What is the result of “head -n 1 /etc/nv_tegra_release”? If this is a dev kit Nano, then the SD card slot will be under the module itself and have no eMMC; if instead this is a third party carrier board, then any SD card slot will be on the carrier board and not on the module (such modules would also have eMMC memory).

Actual USB failure does not seem to occur very often, but there are times when USB fails, especially with incorrect firmware or with power delivery issues. Sometimes software is updated that puts the wrong device tree in. I do not personally have any statistics regarding that.

I have run the command and then connected different USB devices and nothing new appears.

When executing the command “head -n 1 /etc/nv_tegra_release ” the result is:
# R32 (release), REVISION: 3.1, GCID: 18186506, BOARD: t210ref, EABI: aarch64, DATE: Tue Dec 10 06:58:34 UTC 2019

If it is the NVIDIA development kit and I installed the ISO image provided in the guide, I also tried with an image I found prepared for the Jetson nano with Ubuntu 20 to be able to use ROS2. And with that OS the USBs don’t work either.

The strange thing is that they had been working and suddenly they stopped working, then when I tried the second jetson it also failed. The cameras I had connected are HTI HT301 thermal cameras, they are cameras that have little consumption and that on a Raspberry pi 3 have been working well.

When I connect any device the LED does not turn on, neither on the keyboard nor the mouse. If it had been only on 1 jetson nano, I wouldn’t give it too much importance, because in the end it is an electronic component and can fail, but that it is on 2 in a short space of time and that those cameras work without problems on other devices, it seems very strange to me.
Is it possible a firmware failure after having been working? The firmware in this case is on the microSD with the OS?

Thanks for your help.

I am hoping to not see the full dmesg. Is it correct that the result of a USB plug-in of the camera does not append any log at all to the followed dmesg?

L4T R32.3.1 verifies this is an original Nano. Incidentally, that release is rather old. If at some point you can upgrade, then I suggest the newest L4T R32.x. See:
https://developer.nvidia.com/linux-tegra

However, that is Ubuntu 18.04. No 20.04 is available until getting to Xavier hardware. Some people use Docker to work with this, but I could not tell you what the steps are.

Incidentally, if you were to flash the Jetson, then you would want to (A) flash the Jetson itself to get updated QSPI content, and (B) perhaps then just use a newer pre-built o/s image (R32.7.4). One would update QSPI once in flash of the Jetson itself, and then you could use different newer SD card images.

If you are mixing Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 content, then that could be a problem. If you’ve installed anything Ubuntu 20.04 in terms of firmware/device tree, then it is likely parts of the Nano would fail.

Note: If the SD card slot is on the module itself, and not on the carrier board, then the o/s will always be on the SD card unless you’ve gone through some very particular steps to use an external boot device. If you have an SD card slot on the carrier board itself, then this changes everything and you’d need different software to correctly boot and to make USB available.

I think mostly at this time I will suggest flashing one of those Nanos with R32.7.4. This means flashing the Nano, and not necessarily the SD card (the Nano itself has boot content in QSPI separate from the SD card). You could then use an R32.7.4 SD card. You can in fact save your old SD card, or clone it as backup, prior to setting up a new SD card for testing.

Yes, ´dmesg´ is complete and after connecting a USB there are no changes. I received the USB HUB with external power today and it doesn’t work either.

I think the only thing left for me to do is try the QSPI update, since I have tried with different SD cards with different operating systems without success.

Is there any way to update the QSPI system without Nvidia SDK Manager? I have Ubuntu 20 installed on a computer, but I have seen that for SDK Manager and jetson nano Ubuntu 18 or 16 is required. Is there any other way to update? I haven’t found anything clear about it.

Thanks.

If there is absolutely no output on “dmesg --follow” from plugging in a USB device, then the port or the device will be completely dead (this isn’t necessarily hardware failure, and can be due to device tree configuration). For Nanos, which do not have eMMC, this would imply QSPI content. I would agree that QSPI update is the likely next step, and if it is QSPI, then no amount of changing the SD card would change anything.

You can flash on command line even if your flash is from a different host. JetPack/SDK Manager is just the far easier method of installing onto the host PC. You would need to do this with a compatible L4T flash software release (URL given in the previous reply).

To manually install to the host PC you would need to download this content (go to the URL for the most recent R32.x release, or a release that you know the SD card works with):

  • The “driver package”.
  • The “sample root filesystem”.

You would then:

  1. Go to an empty directory and unpack the driver package as a regular user (do not use sudo).
The last step creates a “Linux_for_Tegra/” subdirectory.
  2. Go to “Linux_for_Tegra/rootfs/”. Unpack the sample root filesystem as root (you do use sudo).
  3. cd back to “Linux_for_Tegra/”.
  4. Run “sudo ./apply_binaries.sh”. sudo is mandatory.

At this point command line flash is available. You do not need to repeat the above steps.

From “Linux_for_Tegra/” run this command to see what flash targets exist:
ls jetson*.conf
(in reality those are symbolic links to targets named after board versions)

I am assuming this is a Nano dev kit, and if not, then what I’m telling you is probably wrong, but examine this output:

  • ls jetson*.conf | grep -i 'nano'
  • `ls jetson*.conf | grep -i ‘nano.*qspi’

Those targets which are Nano, but not Orin or Xavier or other newer targets, are flash targets (you’d not name the “.conf” ending in the file name when naming that as a flash target). Specifically, the target you will see that applies to you:
jetson-nano-qspi.conf

This means your flash target name is “jetson-nano-qspi”. On command line, for a normal flash that does not include things like an initrd flash, nor external media like an NVMe, then this would flash QSPI:
sudo ./flash.sh jetson-nano-qspi mmcblk1p1
(note that eMMC models use mmcblk0p1, SD card models use mmcblk1p1)

If you wanted to log that flash for debug purposes or to see what happened, you would flash like this:
sudo ./flash.sh jetson-nano-qspi mmcblk1p1 2>&1 | tee log_flash.txt

This should work on different flavors/distributions of Linux, and with different releases of Ubuntu. It is possible something would be missing and you’d end up adding more software, but for the most part, the above is portable across many Linux releases. Once you use the GUI with JetPack/SDKM there will be more restrictions. It is the driver package though which is the actual flash software.
