Jetson Orin Nano flash timeout on WSL2

Hello,

I am trying to flash Jetson Orin Nano 8GB on NVMe SSD with WSL2 and SDK manager. I have to mention, that previously I was able to flash Jetson AGX Orin to Jetpack 6.2 with the same setup. The Orin Nano came with preinstalled older Jetpack version and I am trying to update it to the newest one. During setup I encounter flash timeout:

13:37:37 INFO: Flash Jetson Linux - flash: Waiting for target to boot-up...
13:37:38 INFO: Flash Jetson Linux - flash: Timeout
13:37:38 INFO: Flash Jetson Linux - flash: Device failed to boot to the initrd flash kernel. Please retrive the serial log during flashing to debug further.

which ends the flashing process. Here is the exported log from SDK manager:

SDKM_logs_JetPack_6.2_Linux_for_Jetson_Orin_Nano_8GB_2025-02-12_13-25-27.zip (226.0 KB)

I tried multiple times, also reconnecting and restarting the Jetson device and the host machine, but I still got the same problem. Some of my guesses why it may not work:

  • I am using the same files that were used for Jetson AGX Orin installation, but SDK manager states that it verifies checksum, so should be OK?
  • My NVMe SSD is 128 GB, but SDK manager recommends 256 GB. However, for SD card option it recommends only 64 GB which is very confusing. Also an older Jetpack version can fit successfully on the device.

I came here to ask for further support on this problem.
Thanks in advance for all helpful responses.

WSL2 is not able to flash Orin NX/Nano.

As the known issue mentioned here: flashing an external storage device is not supported.

Thanks for the fast answer. Maybe it would be good to directly specify what is an “external storage device” in the known issues. I didn’t expect Orin Nano/NX with SSDs fall under that term.
