L4T 28.1 kernel lockup/crash

After a fresh installation of Jetpack 3.1, I got the following kernel lockup/crash when I tried to press the power button of my Dell monitor several times. The monitor is connected to the TX2 via a HDMI cable. The X on the TX2 didn’t start after the installation, so I pressed the monitor power button few times hoping to get it started, which used to work with L4T 27.1 (Jetpack 3.0) after few tries, but now I got this kernel lockup and crash, and it’s reproducible. Any ideas? Thanks.

That’s a fairly generic OOPS. What was the purpose of pressing the monitor power? Was there an issue with video not coming back after sleep, or some similar situation? I don’t see anything in the OOPS related to video, but basically detection of a monitor is hotplug and code would trigger for mode setting on the event of either a cable unplug/plug or power reset. If this is reproducible you might try testing if removing/inserting the cable connector itself does the same thing.

Which leads to another question: Is this an HDMI cable, or is there any kind of adapter between the Jetson and the monitor?

It looks like a watchdog reset, that’s why the stack dump doesn’t make much sense. It was the issue with no video out to the monitor, and when I was using Jetpack 3.0, I noticed that wrong video clock freq was established when the system started, and one way to get around this was to turn the monitor off and on few times until the video shows up. This video reliability issue kinda sucked with 3.0 but I never had this kernel lockup problem. And I’m using a straight HDMI cable with no adapter.

Just tried unplugging the HDMI cable a couple of times, and got the similar oops, and additionally, before the watchdog reset, at 91.xxx second, there was some kinda interrupt timeout error too.

This is my first try with the 28.1, which doesn’t seem very promising. I wonder what experiences others have with the latest Jetpack release.

When the system is up is the loss of video occurring under some special moment, e.g., is it always bad, or perhaps only when coming back from being idle in a normal screen blank for lack of activity?

If you can, when the screen is failing, would it be possible (such as through ssh or serial console) to get the output of (I am curious if configuration data is still present):

sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/tegradc.0/edid

Also, would it be possible to monitor the Xorg.0.log file while doing a power off then back on after the monitor is in the failed behavior? One way to monitor:

It’s been dozens of reboots so far, and only in one occasion, the video, i.e. Ubuntu desktop, showed up, and it was in 4k mode (I’m using Dell 24-inch 4K monitor). When I tried to set the video resolution to 1080p, it went blank again.

Aha! There is a known 4k bug…setting for a different mode would probably work around the issue. Can you verify that it is trying to use a 4k mode and not something smaller?

FYI, the EDID data is good.

Can someone who knows about the 4k bug comment on a patch? I remember there was a patch, but don’t know the details. In other modes I’ve found R28.1 to be rock solid, but my monitor doesn’t even go up to 1080p (it has the right number of pixels, but it is older and aspect ratio won’t do that).

    It doesn’t happen WITHOUT HDMI cable connected. Hotplug after the kernel boot up triggered the same crash.

    It doesn’t crash with 27.1. But more than 50% of time it booted up with a blank screen. If I turn off/on the monitor several times, eventually it would have the video displayed.

    No, looks like the system freezes and that’s why the watchdog exception gets triggered.

Again, it’s WDT reset, the stack trace is likely irrelevant. I can share some logs tomorrow once I’m in front of the board, if you could let me know what exact logs you are looking for. You can find some log lines from Xorg.0.log in post #6, but there’s really not much logged, the system just locked up during the display device initialization.

Why do you share a log using non-4k monitor?? Doesn’t the error happen with 4k monitor?

In post #15, I mentioned it locked up with non-4k monitor too.

I don’t see any error message shown in #15. What do you mean “locked up without any messages printed on the console”?
