HDMI Display is not responding when Jetson Tx1 boot ups

Hi,
I am new to jetson tx1 board. I flashed the jetson 3.0 to my tx1. At first there is no problem for the display. But now when I power on the board there is no response from the monitor. I reflashed the jetson full pack, again there is no display response. Then I reflashed again OS only using this link:

https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1000253/jetson-tx1/jetpack-not-able-to-load-on-tx1/post/5158540/#5158540

Again no response!. But I ssh the board using the host pc from which I flashed the jetpack. Please help me to solve this problem.

The flash and Jetson are probably working correctly for the most part, but video configuration is likely failing. You can check if you can ping the Jetson or ssh in, plus a serial console would be quite useful if you can’t ssh. For serial console see:
http://elinux.org/Jetson/TX1_Serial_Console
http://www.jetsonhacks.com/2015/12/01/serial-console-nvidia-jetson-tx1/

If you can log in via ssh, please post the content of “/var/log/Xorg.0.log”. If ssh fails a serial console may be necessary.

What is the output from:

sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/tegradc.1/edid

In a log where the monitor is found I’d expect to see this excerpt:

[ 12.461] (--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS:
[ 12.461] (**) NVIDIA(0): Using HorizSync/VertRefresh ranges from the EDID for display

This is followed by the “No modes were requested” comment (which is normal), but you are missing the refresh ranges from EDID in between. The edid file should tell us if the information is available and rejected, or if the information is missing.

You can get additional mode information if the EDID file is not empty. If that file is not empty, then add this to your “/etc/X11/xorg.conf” file in the “Driver” section:

Option "ModeDebug"

…once that option is in place reboot and post the new Xorg.0.log.

FYI, if you highlight the pasted log or edid file content with the mouse, and then click on the “code” icon in the upper right (looks like “</>”), it’ll keep some of the formatting and add scroll bars.

Hello linuxdev,
The command

sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/tegradc.1/edid

gives this:

NO EDID

.

Without EDID there is no possibility of automatic configuration, so this seems to be the problem. EDID is provided on a wire in the video cable. On older 15-pin D-sub VGA this wire does not exist. Does your cabling include a 15-pin D-sub at any point? If not, then the cable needs to be inspected for bent/broken pins, or perhaps if DVI, some cheaper DVI cables or adapters are for analog only and leave out the EDID/DDC line (this is rare, most DVI cables have EDID/DDC).

No I just used the HDMI cable only.

Check for bent pins. If you have an alternate HDMI cable, try that. It’s odd that EDID is missing…it isn’t uncommon for the video driver to not like something in that data, but it is rare for the data to be missing when the cable is the correct type.

NOTE: If you ssh in, don’t use the “-Y” or “-X” forwarding options…possibly this would get in the way (though it shouldn’t matter for “cat”).

Hi linuxdev,
I have tried that. i don’t what happened to this board. It was working last week and hdmi is not responding in next morning. Sounds like a comedy right?. Please help me to solve this issue. Do I hav to recompile linux kernel?

Yadu,

What kind of display do you use? I guess it is HDMI? Is it a 4k@60 monitor?

Please use command “dmesg” after tegra boot up and paste kernel log.

Normally I would have some saved logs to look at, but just lost my home partition and need to rebuild everything. Some errors are actually normal, but I did see a number of i2c arbitration errors. The DDC/EDID data uses i2c protocol, so possibly this is why your EDID file in “/sys” was unable to get monitor specifications. One thing I’d suggest is to just see if the monitor works with that same cable on another computer…or if the same monitor on same Jetson works with a new cable. Bottom line though is that without EDID responding there is no possibility of autoconfiguration to succeed (it is always possible the default video mode works, but that is just a matter of luck). Can someone see if the i2c arbitration errors are normal? If not, suspect it is from video EDID.

I don’t see error logs directly related to display controller in dmesg…

Do other display work or not?

No, I tried 3 displays that support HDMI.None of them doesn’t worked…

I finally recovered my home partition (still spending a lot of time rearranging things though). What I see in the Xorg.0.log worth noting:

[ 11.506] (--) NVIDIA(0): Valid display device(s) on GPU-0 at SoC
[ 11.507] (--) NVIDIA(0): DFP-0
[ 11.507] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Found DRM driver drm-nvdc (0)

Normally there is a list of GPUs, monitors attached to GPUs, and then it goes on to the “Found DRM driver…”. In my case it lists my ViewSonic monitor right after the DFP-0. Yours does not see any monitors at all. This again points to missing DDC/EDID channel response. This also results in no data from “VideoBIOS” regarding HorizSync/VertRefresh.

DDC/EDID uses i2c communications. If i2c has something misconfigured in the device tree it is possible it is a software issue, but you’ve flashed, and unless there was something special about flash, then it won’t be an i2c configuration problem. Is anything customized, especially device tree?

If not a software issue, then I’d say you have a hardware failure. This could be in the cable itself, or a connector might have a bent/broken pin, or some sort of adapter on the cable could be a problem (e.g., anything 15-pin VGA D-sub is a guaranteed EDID failure). Since you tried multiple monitors, and those monitors work on other computers, I’d say it has to be something on the Jetson itself which failed (if you used the same cable or adapter though then it still leaves the cable/adapter as an issue). If you have different cables and no adapters in the HDMI, and if the original failing monitor works on another computer, then I’d say it is time to RMA.

Do closely check for bent or broken pins in the relevant connectors. Not all pins are always used, but a bent/broken pin will look different than one not factory installed.

What is the exact cable arrangement, along with any adapters? If you need RMA, see the top of this:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/793798/embedded-systems/some-jetson-web-links/

Hi linuxdev,
I use only HDMI cables, not any adapters. At first I used I used a D-sub adapter and it worked!. In the next morning display is not reponding. Then I flashed again and use an HDMI cable then it works. IN the next morning the same comedy repeates, display is not responding!!!. I think there is any problem with the hardware.

Could you give more description of how the problem hits?

Do you boot up with the display connected or hot-plug? Does any log added in dmesg when you plugged in a HDMI after bootup?

No I HDMI cable is always connected to the tx1 board. I don’t see any line is added in the dmesg when I plugged in aHDMI after bootup.

In one reply it is indicated that there is no EDID/DDC communications…the i2c fails:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1017176/jetson-tx1/hdmi-display-is-not-responding-when-jetson-tx1-boot-ups/post/5181653/#5181653

Without that it isn’t possible to auto configure, although hitting a working default mode would do the job…but it’s just luck when that happens unless you’ve manually set it to a working mode, or something with EDID which did work last set to a working mode which the newest monitor has available. This is why I think it is hardware failure. It is very common for EDID to give something the driver does not like, but it is very uncommon for EDID to fail when cables are HDMI.

Yadu,

If you don’t mind rebuilding the kernel, please try to set use_fallback = true in edid.c.

This would hack a 720p edid. If this could work, then i2c seems fail…
