Legacy driver installation crashes on Xubuntu

I’m on 6.17.0-14-generic system (Xubuntu 24.04) and trying to install legacy driver with NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-470.141.03.run because I need this version without a certain bug.

I followed the method 4 instructions from: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu-24-04

The log file says things like: nvidia/nv-acpi.c:13:10: fatal error: os-interface.h: No such file or directory

I have disabled secure boot from bios. I have tried different versions of gcc and it didn’t help.

Hi Tethyswings,

Support for the 470 legacy release series has ended. Please see Support timeframes for Unix legacy GPU releases | NVIDIA for more details.

Can we still discuss here how to fix the installation problem?

Hi @Tethyswings,

The installation problem stems from the fact that we no longer update the deprecated 470 driver to keep up with the latest linux kernels. That means that the runfile you downloaded lacks changes that are required for it to work on the 6.17.0-14-generic kernel. One option you can look at is patching the runfile yourself to handle the newer required kernel compatibility, but we not longer are doing this as an engineering effort, as explained by @aplattner.

If you are able to use a newer driver with your GPU and are only using 470 for the sake of working around a bug, I would recommend reporting the issue to us to help you migrate to a newer driver. If its already reported, could you share the forum post or internal bug number?

Kernel 6.14 does not install the proprietary driver 470.

The current solution for Ubuntu is:

  • Install Ubuntu or Xubuntu version 22.04 (Kernel 6.8)
  • Install Ubuntu Server 24.04 (Kernel 6.8) and install graphical environment (x11) and the graphical interface
  • Downgrade from Ubuntu/Xubuntu 24.04 kernel to kernel 6.11 or 6.8

Ending support is a questionable decision; I’ve seen countless times people avoiding or not recommending Nvidia graphics cards.

Ex:

Currently a solid driver from NVIDIA is 570xx series. With 575xx series we saw a lot of issues reported. 580xx series wasn’t any better. Most likely the upcoming 590xx series won’t be any better either, as it will also drop a lot of supported older cards … Currently AMD seems to provide faster and better open-source based driver support for Linux Gaming. Mostly also due to Valve and their developers improving that driver stack. NVIDIA developers will focus on AI and less on Linux. You can also…

All I can say is I now avoid Nvidia, I got burned by then about 7 years ago when they stopped support for the Nvidia GPU proprietary driver I had on Linux. nouveau did not work with that chip, so I bought a completely open GPU.

If you need the proprietary Nvidia Driver, I would say look for another GPU.

Pick the AMD. NVidia’s drivers are good IME, but it’s better to not have to bother with drivers at all.

Thanks criptogpu, I’ll try one of these. It’s an older GPU and I didn’t think it were this tricky on Linux… I don’t also disagree to your other reply
