Hello,
I am on Ubuntu 16.04.
I have huge trouble when installing NVIDIA drivers, because I get stuck at log-in: when logging in Ubuntu.
I get back to login page and never enter the session.
Is there a driver compatibility issue?
How can it be fixed please?
NVIDIA proposed to do the following:
Please follow the below installation instructions and check if this helps.

Note that many Linux distributions provide their own packages of the NVIDIA Linux Graphics Driver in the distribution’s native package management format. This may interact better with the rest of your distribution’s framework, and you may want to use this rather than NVIDIA’s official package.
Installation instructions: Once you have downloaded the driver, change to the directory containing the driver package and install the driver by running, as root, sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-358.09.run
One of the last installation steps will offer to update your X configuration file. Either accept that offer, edit your X configuration file manually so that the NVIDIA X driver will be used, or run nvidia-xconfig
Here is my answer to NVIDIA:
I downloaded the file you provided and tried to install it.
I got a first error saying “You appear to be running an X server”, which failed the installation.
Therefore I tried Ctrl+Alt+F1, then sudo service lightdm stop.
I run the NVIDIA installation file (sudo sh NVIDIA.run).
Finally I get another error: “The distribution-provided pre-install script failed! Are you sure you want to continue?”
I aborted at this step.
Can someone please help?
Thx in advance & best regards.
