Mode change/complete fail -- no boot -- 750m -- 319.32

I’ve been trying to boot up Fedora 19 with NVIDIA propitiatory driver 319.32 64 bit version.

When I boot, i see the fedora splash screen and then it freezes. I can go to text mode (alt+shift+f2), and view the /var/log/Xorg.0.log. The listed errors are
NVIDIA(0): Failed to initiate mode change.
NVIDIA(0): Failed to complete mode change.

I have my xorg.conf file as suggested in the NVIDIA manual [url]http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/319.12/README/randr14.html[/url]

I cannot disable intel driver from BIOS.

Any guidance or comments is greatly appreciated.

I’ve attached the nvidia bug report and X.0.org log file. I’m surprised no one else is complaining about this.

I was about to start a new thread when I saw yours. I have exactly the same problems as you with a Nvidia GTX 765m (Optimus). However from what I read on the net there is a chance the Nvidia GPU has no way of directly rendering to the LCD screen and hence must go through the Intel (no hardware multiplexer?). I’ve tried using 319.32 and 325.08 (beta) drivers to no avail.

What currently “half” works for me is to wipe out /etc/X11/xorg.conf. This will use the default Intel card for display. The nvidia module is still loaded and works for my CUDA applications BUT X fails to load the GLX module, thus no OpenGL support in X. I made a post few days ago, but no answer, probably the wrong forum.

I just changed my config and installation to match yours to see if I can replicate your results:

  1. Installed 325.08 beta version
  2. Created ~.xinitrc with contents "xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0" "xrandr --auto" "exec mate-session" (I run mate DE instead of g3)
  3. Wiped out contents of xorg.conf
  4. Modified kernel line by "nomodeset" and "rdblacklist=nouveau"
  5. OS Boots up and says "oops something went wrong" and fallback to tty
  6. Logged in as my username and manually started X by startx

Doing that, I can finally load X. But then I have the same exact issue as you mentioned: it doesn’t load GLX.

I’m guessing there is a way to create a proper xorg.conf to start X such that intel displays the graphics, and nvidia can load up GLX.

Just to add, if you run nvidia-smi it should display your GPU but if you run nvidia-settings it will say something along the lines of no drivers loaded (haven’t got my laptop in front of me atm).

Some further information:

  1. Referring to my original post: After the Fedora splash screen is fully loaded (and stuck), I can increase/decrease the sound using the Fn keys. And I hear a response.
  2. I only have a laptop screen, and no external monitor attached
  3. I've tried both including and excluding Option "UseDisplayDevice" "none" in xorg.conf
  4. Keeping these in mind, our problem is similar to the supposedly "resolved" blank screen problem posted discussed here https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/539322/linux/blank-screen-with-319-12-on-optimus-laptop/1
  5. I've tried pretty much everything discussed in that thread short of connecting my laptop to an external monitor since I don't have one.

I’ve now got this working “3/4” of the way. OpenGL now works but using the Intel GPU (or possibly software renderer).

I did all the above steps I mentioned plus these additional ones.

Edit xorf.conf and add Option “NoDRI” to the nvidia device section eg.

This will disable GLX on the Nvidia GPU forcing it to find another driver. When I run glxsphere I now get

Past coupled of days I’ve been trying to make up for the time lost trying to boot up my computer. So I haven’t turned off the computer nor put it to sleep fearing that it won’t boot again. I’m planning on turn it off probably tomorrow and reboot it to make sure things are stable.

Also, today I finally got around to turning off the computer and rebooting it. It booted up fine, but I still had to manually start up X as before. Sleeping also seems to be working.

I’ve managed to tap into the Nvidia card for OpenGL but via bumblebee, which was a simple apt-get from their PPA.

I’m happy enough with this solution since I don’t require OpenGL that often.

I have some problem with my NVIDIA card in Asus X55VD. When I’m using Windows 8.1 (OEM), the built-in screen works quite good. But when I’m using Linux, for example Ubuntu which I’ve installed, the screen blinks slightly which isn’t good for my eyes. And when I’m rewinding web pages, there is some problem with synchronization - I can see the newer and the older picture at the same time. They are divided on a diagonal line going from bottom left to top right corner.

When I’m using Linux Mint (live), the screen works better. Scrolling the documents is normal, but when I’m changing the brightness something strange occurs. When I’m using the file manager (GUI) and have some icon selected, it blinks quickly when I’m changing the brightness of built-in display, while other elements doesn’t blink visibly. I’m still not sure that the screen works properly. Mint’s developers wrote on their website that Mint contains open source driver and if it doesn’t work, the user should install original driver.
