I am completely exhausted trying to installed the mellanox drivers in esxi4.1u1. i get the following output:

This is supposed to be a lab for a proof of concept, but i am unable to install the drivers. i see people in this commmunity talking about using mellanox on esxi4.x, how did you install the drivers?

um… 4.1 update 1 is supported according to the driver. and… the last part is basically non-sense. I cannot simply “update host with later version” without tens of thousands of dollars.

Is this driver called “ESX41u1_MLNX-OFED-1.4.1-2.0.000.zip” not supported? is esxi not supported?

You must install the driver on supported ESXI host and update host with later version…:)

Give me a few more days on this. Ill post when i have all the information. The driver is “working” for sure. but i would like to post a full post of getting working with the best performance. Ill link the logger the mellanox tech had me enable though.

Mellanox vSphere OFED for vSphere 4.x has a restriction.

Major problem was that need always major build ESXi host.

If there non major build ESXi host then you engage the installation problem.

I was also tried that script, but always failed to install the vSphere OFED v1.4.1-2.0.000 for ESX/ESXi 4.1 U1.

I was must install v1.4.1-2.0.000 for ESX/ESXi 4.1 U1 on ESXi 4.1 U1 Build 348481 then update ESXi host to latest build.

you can install on both ESX, ESXi host.

But some of IB commands can’t excute on ESXi host.

There is restriction that build number.

You can find it on release notes or manuals.

I remember that I used vSphere OFED on vSphere 4.x…:)

Per documentation:

Before installing, please verify if you have on your machine of the following ESXi builds. Run:

/usr/bin/vmware -v

VMware ESXi 4.1.0 build-348481’ - ESX 4.1 Update 1

VMware ESXi 4.1.0 build-260247’ - ESX 4.1

VMware ESXi 4.0.0 build-164009’ - ESX 4.0

VMware ESXi 4.0.0 build-241301’ - ESX 4.0 Update 1

VMware ESXi 4.0.0 build-261974’ - ESX 4.0 Update 2

My version:

/tmp # vmware -v

VMware ESXi 4.1.0 build-348481

The manual later verifies that this build is supported by stating:

Installing Mellanox IB OFED Driver on Non Major ESX/ESXi 4.x Release

  1. Download the ESX_4.x_patch.sh script from www.mellanox.com > Products > Adapter IB/

VPI SW > VMware Drivers.

  1. Run the script.

  2. Install the ESX/ESXi driver according to the procedures described in Section 2.2.1 (page 15)

and Section 2.2.2 (page 16).

However, this is a major build and release…

Inbusiness… i dont know what business you are in, but I think maybe you are in the 0-knowledge-trolling business. you aren’t offering any help whatsoever and just spewing out invalid nonsense.

Yeah, thats what i am saying. this is on a major build. and i had the error, however, i got some help from mellanox in this subject. Enabled some logger and the installation went as expected. ill post when im certain it works.
