Nvidia-open-dkms Wayland/XWayland: Failed to allocate NVKMS memory for GEM object

nvidia-open-dkms : NVIDIA-SMI 610.43.02 - 3060 TI - Niri Wayland Compositor w/ XWayland Satellite

This has been present for a couple of driver versions.

The Crux of the issue is games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Stellar Blade will freeze the image randomly or stay on a black screen between loading transitions. The audio and game logic remain intact, but I cannot play the game on a still frame. The amount of issues I have had with these drivers are ridiculous.

It seems to affect proton games, but I am still not sure.

With dmesg:

[ 1153.318789] [drm:nv_drm_gem_alloc_nvkms_memory_ioctl [nvidia_drm]] ERROR [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00002b00] Failed to allocate NVKMS memory for GEM object

Games Affected (So far):

  • Stellar Blade
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

As an end-user, I am beyond fed up with the years of neglect NVIDIA has bestowed upon its customers who run Linux, It is infuriating to see issues like these have been present for months, and in this case, years.
