On-screen keyboard can't be disabled

We are running an Orin NX with Ubuntu 22.04, Jetpack 6.1. Our application uses a touch screen, with a custom on-screen keyboard we have implemented ourselves.
The problem is that on some data entry fields, a system on-screen keyboard pops up.
Previously, when we used Jetpack 5.1.1 and Ubuntu 20.x, we were able to disable the system on-screen keyboard. With the current setup we can’t find where to do so.
We have tried:

  • changing the user settings for keyboard and accessibility
  • all the gnome settings - both using gsettings and dconf, dconf-editor
  • editing the /etc/gdm3/greeter.dconf-defaults file
  • looking for OSKs like caribou, florence and onboard - which are not installed on our platform
  • renaming the /usr/libexec/gsd-keyboard file
  • looking for processes that have any combination of “keyboard”, “kb”, “osk”, etc.
  • looking for any processes that pop up when the on-screen keyboard does.
  • using gnome-tweaks to find a relevant setting
  • editing the .config/autostart/disable-onscreen-keyboard.desktop to force disabling the OSK and rextarting X-GNOME
  • sudo systemctl disable at-spi-dbus-bus.service
  • creating a ~/.profile file with the line: export GDK_CORE_DEVICE_EVENTS=false
  • looking for a relevant device with xinput list
  • Logging in in Ubuntu, gnome and classic gnome with the above options used

None of these options work. Our goal is to completely get rid of the OSK - including before login.
Any idea what else may be related to the OSK in this configuration?

Hi,
Could you go to Ubuntu forum to get help? It looks like the method may be different on Ubuntu 22.04. Forum users in the forum may have more experience on this and can suggest next.

You are right.
Turned out to be a gnome 42.9 “feature” that forces the appearance of OSK if a touch screen is detected regardless of other settings. Solved by altering the keyboard.js file to only consider the onscreen keyboard settings.
Thanks.
