screen tearing on my dual boot ASUS laptop running gtx 1060 card

hi, i am facing tearing issues after logging onto ubuntu 18.04 for anything above 10 mins. i have to manually reset auto-refresh rate from lxrandr to auto instead of 120 every few minutes, nothing else helps. lxrandr also doesn’t show the full menu, there is no advanced tab and no drop down menu for screen refresh rates, just 120 and auto and even screen display size can’t be changed which someone suggested.
i followed the steps in https://askubuntu.com/questions/289459/nvidia-drivers-installed-but-not-used/308504#308504, even though it looks like the drivers are installed, i get the error ERROR: Unable to write to directory ‘/etc/X11’. My driver version is 440.59. the problem started a few days after upgrading, but not immediately and reverting to the old driver , 435 or 415 didn’t help for long. i’m attaching the log file. any help would be great!. thanks
