Stuck trying to intall nvidia-390 [Ubuntu 18.04 LTS]

I have been trying to work with TensorFlow on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Unfortunately I’ve encountered several issues trying to get everything ready. My current one is installing nvidia-390

sudo apt-get install nvidia-390

It starts installing normally until it just stops. This is the part I got stuck:

I’ve left it for hours and it just won’t go. I’ve interrupted it before, but it created more problems I had to reinstall Ubuntu.

Has anybody encountered the same issue?
I’ve been following these steps: https://medium.com/@taylordenouden/installing-tensorflow-gpu-on-ubuntu-18-04-89a142325138

Thank you!

I suspect it’s waiting for a password for the generated private key but fails to show the password prompt. This should be reported to ubuntu.
Try to enter a password twice blindly.
For a workaround you would have to disable secure boot in bios and reinstall.

Thanks @generix! Your “type password blindly” solution worked for me and I mentioned this at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1775526

+1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1775526

Helped, entered password 4 times and its worked.

Just to add another possible solution. The posted solution of typing the password blindly did not work for me. What worked was pressing ESC four times. The installation then finished successfully.

It didn’t work for me…
I’ve tried several times #2 and #5 and still frozen on this message:

What am I doing wrong?

regards.

daniziz1991, you’re stuck at a different point. Please try a newer driver from the ubuntu graphics ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

Hi generix… same ¿?

I see a higher version of the driver (396.24) but it still stucks at same point…

Any idea why?

It is not the same step. The question asks about betting stuck on the writing the private key stage - you are not even getting there and are stuck on build. Are you currently trying to install a fresh driver directly form Nvidia or ppa? Is it first install or have you tried installing the drivers previously and interrupted the installation process for example?

Hi mmalenta,

Ive tried to install drivers from ubuntu packages, and my last try is from a ppa (as generix told me). It always stuck at same point and it leaves my dkpg in use and i have to reboot and make a purge to clean it all.

Ive come here from this thread: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1046873/dkpg-interrupted-after-trying-to-install-nvidia-340 thats why i thought it was the same point… my bad.

regards,

daniziz1991, please run
dmesg > dmesg.txt
and attach that to your post. Hovering the mouse over an existing post will reveal a paperclip icon.

@mmalenta, @daniziz1991: Disable secure boot on the BIOS configuration and you’ll be fine.

Just tried to install 390.67-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1 - and got hit by both problems mentioned here: They’re not identical, of course - but very much related.

I was first hit by the problem mentioned by the OP in #1. After a long wait, I gave up and closed the terminal window running the install.

However, in order to do anything useful on my machine after that, I had to run ‘dpkg --reconfigure -a’, and I was then struck by the problem mentioned above in #6.

Disabling secure boot solved the problem - the drivers finally installed by running ‘dpkg --reconfigure -a’ and freed dpkg/apt etc. to do other useful tasks. But at the same time, it created another issue - a security issue.

I managed to install VMware Workstation with custom build drivers using secure boot - there must be a way to install the Nvidia drivers as well whilst preserving secure boot?

Regards,
Lars

+1 - this is redic.

entered password 4 times and it made it through for me. Would just hang indefinitely.

On Ubuntu the “invisible password” issue was reported on Launchpad as bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dkms/+bug/1781001 and has been fixed by a stable release update on July 23rd. You should definitely not be seeing this problem on any up-to-date systems, including anything installed using 18.04.1 media.
Can you tell if you’re still seeing this problem on a fully up to date 18.04 or 18.10 (development release)

Thanks!
