Ok, didn’t read thouroughly enough. This is expected. Nvidia-settings needs a running X server on the nvidia gpu but you have a Tesla, a compute accelerator, not a graphics card.
You could run a virtual Xserver inside the Tesla video memory to use nvidia-settings but I’m unsure what your use case for this would be. What do you want to achieve?

No, no use case. I will purely use it for GROMACS and GAMESS.
Just did not realize not being a graphics card means no nvidia-settings.
Thanks very much.

Hi,

I am having the login loop issue. It started login loop suddenly
It was working fine before with cuda version 8 on Ubuntu 16.04 .

Now i removed previous nvidia driver and installed new driver 367.48

My GPU card is NVIDIA Corporation GK110B [GeForce GTX TITAN Black

Operating System is Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS

Please uninstall the .run installer using --uninstall option.
Then, please upgrade your HWE stack using

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

Add the Ubuntu graphics ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
and install the driver from that (sudo apt install nvidia-415)
If you have further problems after that, please open a new thread, run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root and attach the resulting .gz file to your post. Hovering the mouse over an existing post of yours will reveal a paperclip icon.

HI generix.

Today I am talking about the system which you guided my colleague some month back which was having login loop issue after installing Nvidia drivers and it got solved at that time.

Now same system having issue with gcc and i correctd it.

Now I rebooted the system and it [b]comes to CLI only ,not to GUI.

when i try "sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 " command it gives the error that “‘xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04’ has no installation candidate”

could you please look into it?

thanking you in advance

I had the same thing happen to me in 19.10 and with nvidia-driver-435. The solution for me was to install lightdm as my display manager.

sudo apt-get install lightdm
