Ubuntu 18.04 no login screen after Nvidia driver install

nvidia-bug-report.log (717.7 KB)

Hello - I installed Ubuntu 18.04 and have 2 GeForce RTX 2080 NICs. I installed the Nvidia drivers as shown below but nvidia-smi fails as it could not communicate with the Nvidia driver. This is my second attempt and I have attached the bug-report.log. In my first attempt I rebooted my desktop after installation of the nvidia driver but I did not get a login screen. The desktop boots fine with the default nouveau driver but I am going to be using CUDA so I need the Nvidia driver. Thanks in advance.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-440 nvidia-prime
sudo prime-select nvidia

The log while using the nouveau driver didn’t show anything obvious why it should fail with the nvidia driver. Please create a new one while using the proprietary driver. If you can’t reach the console, try using ssh from a different computer.
