Visual C++ redistributable 2013 installed but CUDA 8 says no when installing it

I installed visual c++ redistributable 2013, but when I launch CUDA 8.0, the installer tells me that there is no supported version of visual studio installed.

Isn’t visual c++ redistributable 2013 what I need for cuda 8 ?

Thank you

CUDA requires a host toolchain (compiler, linker, etc). The redistributable packages from Microsoft comprise various associated libraries in DLL form, i.e. these packages provide libraries required by excecutables built with the MSVC toolchain, not the toolchain itself.

As far as I know, Microsoft makes free versions of their toolchain (with limited functionality) available for free. I don’t know the details, I think this is called “Community Edition” these days. I am also not sure whether CUDA is functional with these limited free versions. Sorry to be vague, I pay for professional versions of MSVS myself so have only passing knowledge.

Yes, you have to actually install the proper Visual Studio package. The redistributables alone are not enough, and the installer is informing you of that.
