Xavier AGX loosing 1ad0 PCI bridge after R35-4.1 upgrade

We have a fleet of Xavier AGX’s on the CTI rogue carrier board. After some field upgrades from R32 (release), REVISION: 4.4 to R35 (release), REVISION: 4.1, the PCI bus appears to have significant issues.

I just recently got an example of this back from the field, and we tested the individual components (first suspecting NVMe failure, then carrier board).

The ones with the bad upgrade only show the. bottom two devices, and bridge device 1ad0 is missing.

We got the agx in house, reflashed it with the reference R35-4.1 image, and put it on the dev kit and it continued to not have the 1ad0 bridge device.

Also, try other kind of pcie device too. Basically it would be specific pcie device case.

And could you just reply these questions first?

  1. Is the issue reproducible on NV devkit or not?
  2. If it can, then what issue do you see? Which PCIe controller has problem?
  3. If it cannot reproduce on devkit, how about they report this issue to ConnectTech first as I saw the board is CTI rouge?
  4. Is this issue happened to only specific module or every module?

1: The above dmesg is from the Nvidia devkit. It has been made abundantly clear that you wish us to rule out the CTI rogue board. We have removed the CTI board, This is only on the Nvidia devkit, and using the devkit BSP, with no CTI hardware.

2: Pcie bridge 1ad0 is missing, I do not exactly know how to map this to the exact lanes, I can do some lspci type commands if desired.

3: The pcie bus does not enumerate on the devkit after flashing, nor after transfering to the nvidia devkit. CTI indicates that this pcie bus is on the Nvidia side.

4: About 4-8 of the 16 we have field flashed. This dmesg is from the first unit we have received back from the field, I have been unable to damage one in this manner in the office here, but devices returned from the field have the consistently damaged PCIe bridges, which flashing and/or switching to dev kits do not clear.

    Which pcie slot are you using for this missing “1ad0” bridge on devkit?
    If you don’t know the mapping, then you can tell me this. This will indicate which controller is not working here.

  2. please be aware that I need lspci -vvv + dmesg but not only dmesg.

  3. Did you ever check the bridge is alive or not before deploying it to field? I mean this issue sounds like bridge was working in the beginning but it goes dead after deployment for a while?

Hi Wayne, took a bit for us to get the devkit we have reserved for use on this.
→ downgraded the unit in question to jetpack 4.4 and running on the nvidia branded devkit, here are lspci -vv and dmesg outputs of the AGX unit with the missing 1ad0 pcie bridge.
In the intervening week, we’ve had two more units exhibit this failure. I’ll pull some logs from them shortly and see if they are exhibiting similar issues. Thanks for your time.

I am not sure what you are doing. Does this issue happen on only Jetpack5 or even Jetpack4?

The situation is I am asking question A,B,C and you just didn’t reply them but gave me a new situation D.

Let me try describing the problem again.

We have fielded a fleet that includes Xavier AGX modules that are on CTI rogue carrier boards. When fielded, the entire fleet was running Jetpack 4.4.

Upon field upgrading to 5.2.1, a number of them (roughly 5 out of 32) are missing ability to use NVME drives, and the entire 1ad0 pcie bridge is missing. I have received 3 failed units back here at HQ for RCA.

Upon disassembling and trying, the hardware failure remains present when transfering the AGX module to the nvidia branded devkit, and reflashing with the provided images (via SDK manager). The lspci and dmesg’s provided are from an AGX module and ONLY on the nvidia supplied devkits. The affected units will not enumerate any nvme drives on the nvidia dev kit.

Have you tried other nvme ssd to validate and cross check the carrier board itself is fine?

We did a 45 minute screenshare/demo with the Inception support engineers, demonstrating exactly that to them, did they not pass on any of that to you?

The error originally showed up on the CTI board. It has been made abundantly clear that we will get no support until we overwhelmingly prove that the issue is not linked to the cti carrier board. We contacted CTI support, even though the issue tracked the AGX, not the CTI board, and would follow the AGX module between multiple CTI carrier boards as well as the NVIDIA branded dev kit

The AGX modules that have damaged PCIe bridges will not enumerate any nvme devices, I’m not sure how they even would, to the best of my introspection, the bus they would enumerate on does not exist on these damaged modules…

Again, to make this very clear, these devices were operational for months with nvme’s and were running on jetpack 4.4, during the upgrade to 5.2 they stopped enumerating nvme and pcie. The bus nor nvme would show up after re-flashing (first assumption: bad flash, didn’t work). Nor after replacing nvme device (second assumption, bad nvme). Nor after replacing the cti carrier board with a known good one (Third assumption: bad CTI board). Nor after reflashing with stock BSP and putting on our only known good devkit.

Doing further devkit testing is difficult, as we still have not received the additional nvidia devkits from our inception partners, nor do we yet have an estimated delivery date.

I have no idea about what you are telling. The only communication happens in this post… No one ever contact me for anything else.

Honestly, I don’t really care about the situation on CTI board. Please do every cross check on your devkit.

Your assumption 1,2 should be tested on NV devkit but not CTI board. NV moderators don’t directly debug on custom board.

Also, if it turns out to be hardware defect, then only thing to do is RMA.
