Install procedure for Asus XG-C100C 10gbe PCIe adapter in Jetson Xavier AGX?

Hello, I am at my wits end after spending the evening trying to bring up the Asus XG-C100C 10gbe PCIe adapter installed in the Jetson Xavier AGX PCIx slot. It shows no sign of life, no LEDs, it’s cold to touch. Nothing shows up in ifconfig, or sudo lshw -class network, or lspci

I am no expert at all this, it’s amazing that simply installing a network card could be so fragile and complicated. What I have done is:

Gone to: XG-C100C|Wired Networking|ASUS Global, and downloaded “ASUS XG-C100C Driver Version 2.4.3.0_207 (For Linux) Support to Linux kernel 5.5”, then:

tar -zxf atlantic.tar.gz
cd Linux
make
sudo modprobe ptp
sudo modprobe crc_itu_t
sudo insmod atlantic.ko
sudo rmmod atlantic
sudo su
make && make install

Don’t have any guidance or expertise for what else to do. If I:

I see several threads on here where people say they have gotten this card, and other 10Gbe cards, working. Can someone please post a set of instructions for how to get this up and running, I would greatly appreciate it!

The fact that the device is not showing up in lspci output means that there is some issue with the PCIe link up itself.
Could you please share the output of dmesg?
Also, please change the below two entries in the PCIe controller’s DT node and see if it helps?

  • Change ‘num-lanes’ to ‘1’
  • Change ‘nvidia,max-speed’ also to ‘1’

I simply asked you for a little more clarity in your suggestion, and you basically respond “RTFM”? There are many thousands of pages of documentation on this system, and it’s actually not particularly obvious where to even begin for new users (and I’ve been at this for months). Last night I spent a couple hours going from online to PDF document, to forums, and found NOTHING relating to your suggestions. After build the dtb, you need to put the corresponding dtb to your Linux_for_Tegra/kernel/dtb and the nun the flash command again.

You may ask which dtb should you put into this path. You can use command “dmesg |grep dts” on device side and it will tell you the file name.

Also, if you want to flash dtb only, you can use command

sudo ./flash.sh -r -k kernel-dtb YOUR_BOARD_NAME mmcblk0p1

Thank you Wayne for your help! I am on travel the rest of the week so will be away from the hardware and pausing this for a bit. But, per your suggestion I read through the link you sent. I must say, this was quite disconcerting if you mean I must set everything up to rebuild a custom kernel, and do so, and reflash my system wiping out hours of setup I’ve done…just to plug in and use a network card that Nvidia says is supported! For a systems user like myself, trying to focus on the prototype and application code for a new radar processor integrating 4 Jetson’s together…this is exhausting. I’m not a software engineer, much less one who builds kernels, just trying to plug in a card here and one would think it would just work, or at least Nvidia would supply a walk-through on how to setup a supported card like this.

Having said all that–digging through things again tonight I saw in dmesg that the system was turning off the PCIE at the end, which clearly seemed wrong. As an experiment–since I have four systems sitting side by side behind me–I moved the Asus card to a different system #2. AND IT JUST WORKED. Your L4T default config 32.6.1 just loaded the driver for the card and it was up and running as eth1. I plugged in a cable and it got an IP address and I could login in through that path. I unpacked a 2nd Asus card and tried system #3—it didn’t work just like #1. I moved that card to system #4–and it just worked.

What the heck? These are identical Jetsons, I used your manager to flash all 4 systems one after the other the same way. The only differences are that for testing I have 3 different brands of NVMe SSD in them (#1: Samsung 970, #2 Sk Hynix, #3 & #4 Samsung 980). No pattern there. And, that I had tried to install the driver on #1 when it didn’t work, following the Asus instructions. So, it turns out no driver install is needed (you guys could have pointed that out), but for some reason it doesn’t always work.

As an aside, I moved right on to my real objective, performance testing the 10Gbe link, and sadly it only clocked 143.MB/s on a huge file (versus 110MB/s on 1Gbe), even though both ends report the following with ethtool, doesn’t this look right?

Where do you see this card is supported? This is my first time seeing someone asking about this card.

Are you talking about you are using the same ethernet card in 4 jetson Xavier devkit and some devices can work while rest of them cannot? I also see you mentioned some NVMe ssd is in use, could you remove them and test the ethernet card again?

On your item (2), yes, I have 4 systems different only on NVMe SSD, and I’ve tried the same working cards (2 cards) in all 4 systems, and it works with zero changes in two of them, but not in the other two. On Saturday I can try it again pulling the NVMe SSDs, but that is very unlikely to prove anything, because: a) the two that work use different drives, b) the two that fail use different drives, and c) two of the drives are the same model, installed in two Jetsons, one PCIe card works while the other doesn’t. All the drives are extensively tested for weeks.

BTW, I am not sure why you call it “systems”. Isn’t it just devkit? or something else like a custom carrier board?

Also, could you dump the dmesg and lspci for work and NG case for same kind of card? We need the log to check what is going on there.

Sorry the delay, I got back to this Monday, but encountered issues so it took a while to sort through this. First, to your questions, yes, “system” means “devkit + SSD + PCIe card”, with configuration varying per experiment as we’ve discussed. So, I followed your request and did the following:

  1. I removed the SSD from each of the devkits
  2. Put them back together and powered them up…AGX1 appeared on LAN ssh, AGX2-4 did not, although the LEDs were all on and they drew power.
  3. I moved them to a different bench with monitor/mouse/keyboard, and while AGX1 booted to the desktop, AGX2-4 were stuck on a screen:
  4. After the 90 seconds it progressed as follows:
  5. It offered me the maintenance shell, so I accepted
  6. Obviously it was hanging up because I had pulled the SSD, so I commented out that line in /etc/fstab, rebooted, and it came up fine to the desktop. Repeated for the other two, same result.
  7. Put them back on the lan, now ssh worked fine in all 4.
  8. Without doing anything else, I captured dmesg, lspci, and ifconfig for all 4.
  9. I inserted the same Asus XG-C100C card, one at a time, into each system and captured the 3 logs again.
  10. To my amazement, ALL FOUR of the 10Gbe cards were now recognized as eth1, and had IP addresses.
  11. I rebuilt my cluster of 4 Jetsons, now each with their own 10Gbe card, and connected those onto a 10Gbe switch, the 5th port going to my LAN and laptop.
  12. All are accessible by ssh
  13. I used iperf3 to measure performance, which was working well, although only at 5.2Gbits/sec on average. I’m wondering why the performance is low, these are new CAT6 1.5 foot cables. But it does at least work!

So, I look forward to your insights as to why the PCIE cards don’t work when an SSD is installed, this is not very friendly? Now that I have the PCIE cards running, how to I get the SSDs back installed and everything playing together? What should I look for to debug the 10GBe speed issue, or is 5Gbits/sec to be expected? Why does the system crash when you remove the SSD drive, just because it has an entry (not the boot drive!) in the /etc/fstab?

Ok, since we confirmed this issue is related to SSD+ PCIe LAN card. Could you just dump these logs in one device?

  1. AGX+ SSD + PCIe LAN card.
    dmesg + lspci -vv
  2. AGX + PCIe LAN card
    dmesg +lspci -vv

No need to share anything else. I just need those logs. And no need to dump log for all 4 boards since now we know the behaviors are same.
If you hit something like “emergency mode”, please just ignore this at this moment. They are not what we are focusing on. If you want to check that issue, please file a separate issue for it. We only deal with one kind of issue in each topic.

Also, just some personal suggestion, if you have lots of SSD and PCIe LAN card on your side to test, it would be better to share your result as a table or something like a picture that is easy to read. To me, since I have to check lots of posts each day, it is not very easy to get my memory back when read your posts after few days. Especially under the situation that you have 4 AGX and lots of SSD+ LAN cards.

@WayneWWW, thanks for your quick message. I’m sorry you were overwhelmed with all the info I sent you, I certainly can imagine how difficult it is to follow all these threads. But, please realize I simply sent you what you asked for. I’m not doing anything exotic, and there is only really one configuration, just 4 identical devkits, this should really just work, but it doesn’t. I appreciate your help and patience.

Having said that, I did what you suggested on my AGX2 devkit, and collected the logs, but putting the SSD back in, it just all worked. SSD works. PCIe 10Gbe works. It boots without incident. Here are the three logged cases:

Each file contains both dmesg and lspci. Anyway, it now works. The only obvious difference was, adding the PCIE card would not work when the SSD was installed and mounted, but when you do it in the other order it seems to work. It would be great to understand why this happens, and it would also be great if Nvidia would take the time to post guides for installing an SSD and PCIE card so we aren’t all groping in the dark, and discovering things like this, and bothering you guys in the forum about it! Particularly if there are strange dependencies like this, I’ve wasted several days of effort chasing this down. I’ll proceed to check the other three tomorrow. Thanks, --Scott

I have 2 more questions with your latest comment here.

  1. How did you “adding the PCIE card” when “SSD was installed the mounted”? I mean AGX Xavier does not support PCIe hotplug. Which means you cannot just plug in a PCIe card when system is booting up.
    Thus, it means it is not possible to really achieve the “order” you are doing here. Unless what you are talking about is the ethernet cable hotplug but not the PCIe card hotplug.

  2. What does not mean “installed and mounted”? Does your “mount” mean you use command to auto mount the SSD after system is up?

Sorry if my terminology is confusing you. I’ve been an EE for almost 40 years, rest assured I’m not going to plug in the PCIE card while the system is on or booting!
Case 1 above: The SSD is not installed. PCIE card is installed. Boot and log info.
Case 2 above: The SSD is installed. PCIE card remains installed. Boot and log info. (the /etc/fstab is not yet modified, so the SSD is never mounted)
Case 3 above: The /etc/fstab is restored to where it had been 2 days ago to mount the SSD on next boot. Powerdown and reboot. The SSD remains installed. PCIE card remains installed. Boot and log info. (only difference this time is the SSD is mounted during boot)

Is any of case/log here showing the error that ethernet pcie card fails to run?

Please be aware that when you firstly started this thread with vidyas, your “lspci” cannot show any LAN card when this issue happened. However, in our test here, 3 of these cases have below device in your lspci.

Ethernet controller: Aquantia Corp. AQC107 NBase-T/IEEE 802.3bz Ethernet Controller [AQtion] (rev 02)

This means the issue is not on PCIe side anymore.

Hi Wayne, you caught me heading to sleep and I’m tired, but I don’t get your point. The entire issue was that in the beginning (systems had been operating for weeks with SSD, no issues) I installed the PCIE card and it didn’t show up at all (lspci, dmesg). I later tried it in another AGX and it just worked. Unboxed a 2nd PCIE card, tried it in 3rd system, didn’t work. Tried 4th system, worked. You asked me to remove the SSDs and do it again, so I did, then PCIE worked fine across the board with no other changes. Then I put the SSDs back in, they worked, and PCIE still worked, which is now. There is no issue now at all, only understanding why there is such a dependency that you can’t install the PCIE card with SSD present, but after PCIE installation you can put the SSD in and everything works. I and perhaps others, and maybe you as well, might want to understand this for the future.

This does not make sense at all. As I said, since we don’t support hotplug for any PCIe device.

No matter the SSD is plugged first or PCIE LAN card is plugged first, they are all under power off state. That is why I said your “order” here makes us confused.

My expectation was when SSD and PCIE LAN card are in use together, no matter what kind of order it is, PCIE LAN card shall all not work.

Please correct me if my understand to your “order” here is wrong.

Wayne, we are just going in circles, it seems English comprehension is getting in the way here. Nobody is talking about hotplug except you, we covered this a couple hours ago when you were confused earlier. I have very clearly stated what is going on in the previous messages, repeating things is not going to clear anything up. The entire problem has been about the installation order. Everything now works (at least on AGX2, I need to check the others tomorrow to be sure that PCIE still works when I put the other 3 SSD’s back in) after the pointless de-installation and re-installation of the SSD. But why did this happen? What caused this malfunction? What fixed it? Why does it sometimes work in otherwise identical devkit configurations? There must be many other people who are/will struggle with this same issue.

Can we have a scenario that there is a AGX devkit, a pcie LAN card and a NVMe SSD on the table. AGX is not powered on and and NVMe and PCIe Lan are not connected to AGX either.
Could you tell me how can we hit (and cannot hit) this issue with the order you said here? How should I connect it and when should I power on the AGX?

My point to mention “hotplug” is because I don’t think “installation order when AGX device has no power” has any meaningful point. That is why I cannot understand what kind of “installation order” you are talking about. If the AGX itself has no power, then whether PCIe LAN card or SSD is firstly inserted should not make any difference.
If this is what you are talking about, then I would ask our hardware folks to comment on this. I only work from software side so this kind of issue is out of what I can tell. Maybe plug in the SSD and LAN card after you make sure the devkit has no power on it?

Or maybe we can wait for your test result tomorrow. Don’t make any conclusion too early.
