A100, Dell 7920

First, I realise that this is not a supported use case and that this card is designed for servers but I have one laying around and would like to put it to good use.

After reading other threads online I have installed a 40GB A100 in a Dell 7920, I have enabled above 4G decoding, disabled as many built-in devices (ethernet, serial, etc).

128GB Ram

Second nvidia GPU (nvidia t400)

Xeon 4210R (it is PCIe 3.0)

I have installed the A100 in slot 4, which should get the most lanes (I can set the balance in the bios and gave it the maximum possible).

The bios recognises the A100 as a ‘display adapter’ in the correct slot. However the machine just automatically loads the bios setup at each reboot. If I exit it, the machine will reboot but return to the bios setup. If I remove the A100 the machine boots normally.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Yes, A100 is not supported according to the Dell 9020 official document.

Here are some possible causes and suggestions:

  1. No good slot

Now it is in slot 4, maybe you change it to another slot, the appearance will be different.

  1. BIOS Settings

If there’s a default initial graphics device set in the BIOS, try changing it to another option or set it to auto.

  1. Other Device Conflicts

Since there’s another NVIDIA T400 GPU(which is not support either officially) installed in the system, there might be resource conflicts. Try installing only the A100 and removing the T400 to see if the system can boot normally. Or you can try to change T400 to another slot.
