AGX Orin PCIe 4.0 x8 C5 on Xavier AGX Devkit Baseboard (P3701 with P2888)

Hello Jetson-Team,

As I am migrating a custom baseboard we developed inhouse for the AGX Xavier to the AGX Orin, I am facing a Problem with the PCIe Port C5 (As Root Port).
As the custom baseboard heavily borrowed the pinning from the Xavier AGX Devkit, I replicated the problem on the P2888 baseboard. (Xavier AGX Devkit)

I have followed the following documents:

  • The Pinmux Excel Sheet
  • Schematics for P2888 and P3737
  • In addition I took inspiration from this tutorial: SOLUTION/TUTORIAL: Jetson ORIN Enabling PCIE power

The pinning between the Orin AGX Devkit and the Xavier AGX Devkit regarding this port are rather small: REFCLK_SEL moves from Q.04 to AA.04 and 3V3_EN moves from H.04 to Z.02. The pinmux and GPIO-Settings add AA.04 and Z.02 to PULL_NONE and “gpio-output-low” (both being “rsvd0”).

On Orin, the ODMDATA-String needs to be on Config #1 (Root Port) for the NVHS-Entry: “nvhs-uphy-config-0” is set.

Booting the system works, but the PCIe remains disabled (or simply does not work, as “lspci” returns nothing)
/sys/kernel/debug/gpio outputs these values for the used GPIO

Manually changing the values of PA.01 and PZ.02 (via /sys/class/gpio) allows activation and deactivation of the 3V3 and 12V rails of the PCIe connector. (Measured with a multimeter at the connector)

The I2C-Connection which is used for negotiating between the Orin Root Port and the PCIe-Endpoint-Card is I2C3 (Pins E53/F53 → GPIO PP.2 and PP.3 → i2c@3180000): got tested, and works.

After releasing the bus resources, the PCIe seems to be gone for good. Sadly my knowledge stops at IOMMU groups and the signaled IRQ.

Funny enough: The System still complains about the baseboard somehow: I don’t know if there is any connection to that?

Additional changes to the P3701-0004-P3737-0000 Devkit-Setup are:

  • Removed EEPROM Read size:
- cvb_eeprom_read_size = <0x100>

  • Removed “compatible”-String for “nvidia,p3737-0000+p3701-0004” from dtb. (this one seems to break my HDMI output somehow in Linux…)

  • Activated RGMII-Ethernet (our custom board does not support 10GBE) with the necessary changes in Pinmux, GPIO and Device Tree.

The used PCIe card is a Intel E810 NIC, whose driver is present as a module (supplied by Jetson Linux, no Kernel or Module-Recompilation required) → Driver name: “ice”.

Other than the PCIe not working, the system seems to boot at appropriate speeds and runs smoothly.

Thank you for that checklist - I was not aware of its existence. I was able to resolve the issue.

Sorry for the late answer, I first had to find probes that allow me to measure the signals between the slotted Orin-Module and the slotted PCIe card.

The Orin Devkit image uses GPIO N.2 (Pin K56) for some ethernet functionality (?) which meant, the pinmux was set to the function “eth1”. On the Xavier Devkit, this pin is linked to an additional “pull down”-circuit for the PERST# signal.

Apparently, the “eth1” function on that pin pulls the signal down. Changing its function to “rsvd1” and configuring it as an input (high-Z) resolves the issue.
The moment that pinmux/gpio-Setting was changed, the PCIe link came up.
