Assistance Needed with NVIDIA CloudXR Performance Issues Over VPN

Hello NVIDIA CloudXR Community, I am reaching out because we are experiencing some performance issues with NVIDIA CloudXR when using it over a VPN, and I would greatly appreciate any insights or assistance you can provide.

Issue Description:

We are using an OpenVPN UDP VPN over a 5G network to connect to a VM in our network. When we are geographically close to the server hosting our VM, CloudXR performs flawlessly. However, when we are further away (over 100 km), we encounter the following issues upon starting VR in the Meta Quest 2 headset:

  1. The screen flickers and freezes briefly.
  2. The headset logs display the message: [Network Dropped this frame].
  3. After about ten seconds, the VR experience resumes but with poor quality.
  4. The bandwidth sent by the VM to the headset drops to approximately 10 Mbps, despite the headset showing a VPN bandwidth of over 100 Mbps and the VM having a bandwidth of over 3 Gbps.

The issue also occurs when we are connected to a WiFi network that is not part of our local network.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  • Confirmed that the issue only occurs when connected over the VPN and at a significant geographical distance.
  • Verified bandwidth capabilities of the headset and VM.

We ended up setting up a wireguard vpn instead of openvpn, in UDP, and it seems that the situation has improved greatly. Now there’s no freeze when starting up VR, and the quality in the headset is much better.
