I just got a new Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit and cannot get any output from it by any method during initial setup. Here’s everything I’ve tried, in order:
Hardware/setup: Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit, microSD storage, bundled DC power supply. I did not short the FORCE_RECOVERY pins, so it should not be in recovery mode. Hosts used for testing: an Ubuntu PC and a macOS laptop.
Display:
On first power-on with the factory firmware, I connected a monitor via a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter. The monitor reports “no signal” and stays black (I never see the UEFI setup menu or any boot output).
I flashed a JetPack 5.1.3 image to the SD card (to update the firmware toward 36.x for JetPack 6, and to read the UEFI firmware version).
With the 5.1.3 card inserted, the monitor still shows “no HDMI signal detected”, black screen.
USB-C device mode:
I connected the Jetson’s USB-C port to a host (tried both the Ubuntu PC and the Mac) with the board powered. No serial device ever appears.
On the Ubuntu host, the kernel log showed repeated device descriptor read/64, error -71 and unable to enumerate USB device on that port.
Debug UART (J14):
I tried a USB-to-TTL adapter on the J14 button header but it no serial device appears whether or not it is wired to the Jetson.
Board:
The board becomes very hot shortly after I plug in the DC power supply, so something appears to be running/drawing power?
So I have no working way to see any boot output - display, USB-C console, and debug UART have all failed.
Is this likely a defective unit? or is there something else I should try??

Based on the provided context, I’ll attempt to help you troubleshoot the issue with your Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit.
Initial Observations
You’ve tried multiple methods to get output from the device, including:
DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter (no signal)
USB-C device mode (no serial device appears)
Debug UART J14 (no serial device appears)
The board becomes very hot shortly after plugging in the DC power supply, indicating that something is running/drawing power.
Possible Causes
Defective Unit: It’s possible that the device is faulty, especially since you’ve tried multiple methods to get output and none have worked.
Power Issues: The fact that the board becomes very hot shortly after plugging in the DC power supply could indicate a power-related issue.
UEFI Firmware Issues: The UEFI firmware might be corrupted or not functioning correctly, preventing the device from booting properly.
Hardware Configuration Issues: There might be a problem with the hardware configuration, such as a loose connection or a faulty component.
Troubleshooting Steps
Verify Power Supply: Ensure that the DC power supply is functioning correctly and providing the required voltage (12V) to the device.
Check for Loose Connections: Verify that all connections, including the microSD card, are securely connected to the device.
Try a Different Display: If possible, try using a different display or monitor to rule out any issues with the current display.
Use a Different USB-C Cable: Try using a different USB-C cable to rule out any issues with the current cable.
Check the Debug UART J14: Double-check that the USB-to-TTL adapter is correctly connected to the J14 button header and that the serial console is properly configured.
Try a Different Host: If possible, try using a different host computer to rule out any issues with the current host.
Comparison with Similar Issues
Based on the provided context, I found similar issues reported by other users, such as:
“Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit – Black Screen and Fan Stops After Boot (JetPack 5.1.3)”
“Booting issue Jetson Orin Nano boot”
“Jetson nano usb uart isn’t booting”
These issues seem to be related to booting and output problems, similar to what you’re experiencing. However, without more information, it’s difficult to determine if the causes are the same.
Conclusion
Based on the provided context, it’s difficult to determine the exact cause of the issue. However, I recommend trying the troubleshooting steps outlined above to rule out any potential causes. If none of these steps resolve the issue, it’s possible that the device is faulty, and you may need to contact NVIDIA support for further assistance.

Just wanted to provide an update in case it helps anyone else troubleshooting this issue.
I was able to get video output working by replacing the DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter with a direct DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable connected to a monitor with a native DP input.
As soon as I switched to the DP-to-DP connection, the display came up normally, so in my case the issue appears to have been related to the DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter rather than the Jetson Orin Nano itself.
