[BUG] Black screen at boot with RTX 5060 Ti on ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II (no iGPU, Linux)

Hello NVIDIA community,

I’m experiencing a persistent black screen issue at boot with my new GeForce RTX 5060 Ti on an ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II motherboard, running Ubuntu/Xubuntu Linux. Here’s a detailed summary of my setup and the steps I’ve taken so far:

Hardware & Software Setup

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti (no iGPU on CPU)
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II (BIOS up to date)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9
  • OS: Ubuntu/Xubuntu (latest stable release)
  • Driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-580.119.02 (installed via .run file, no errors reported)

Issue Description

GRUB displays correctly.
After selecting the OS, the screen goes black, fans spin up to 100%, and the system becomes unresponsive.
The GPU was installed using an AMD Radeon RX 6800 (which works fine), then switched back to the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti.

Troubleshooting Steps Already Taken

Reinstalled NVIDIA drivers multiple times.
Tried both Ubuntu and Xubuntu (same result).
Checked BIOS settings (PCIe Gen4, Above 4G Decoding enabled, CSM disabled).
No iGPU available on the CPU, so no fallback option.
Note: I do not have Windows installed, so I cannot use the NVIDIA GPU UEFI Firmware Update Tool for RTX 5060 Series as suggested in some threads. I will try to find a workaround or a Linux-compatible method.

Questions for the Community

  1. Would switching to a different motherboard likely resolve the issue?

  2. Should I consider upgrading to a GeForce RTX 5060 Ti instead?

I’m building a workstation primarily for AI/Deep Learning workloads (PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.).
Any insights, similar experiences, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello,

I’m experiencing the exact same issue with my Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5060 Ti Gaming OC 16G with Asus TUF GAMING A520M-PLUS WIFI motherboard, running OS Linux Ubuntu 24.04.

This OS was installed with an AMD RX 6600 running perfectly. I’ve decided to upgrade to newer GPU to try some AI tools more efficiently because I’ve read that green team is better for AI works due to libraries builded for Cuda.

Hardware & Software Setup

  • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5060 Ti Gaming OC 16G

  • Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING A520M-PLUS WIFI

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (no iGPU)

  • OS: Ubuntu 24.04

Issue Description
GRUB displays correctly too
After selecting the OS, the screen goes black too, fans spin up to 100% (scary!!), and the system becomes unresponsive too…

Personnal searches
I’ve read on various forums that Nvidia drivers have always an adaptation time before being usable on Linux for newer card models. I’ve read some tutorials talking about building from source the kernel (I’ve never done that before so don’t want to try risking to brick my GPU…)

Questions for the Community
I’m wondering if there are news about installing and using Linux (Debian or Ubuntu) with this GPU, and a reliable method to make it works without risk of bricking my devide…

Important notes:
I’m using Windows 11 (latest update) on another SSD with the same hardware and all perfectly works, but I would like to use Linux instead.

Thanks in advance for your help…

Hello,

Maybe you need to enable the following options in the BIOS under Advanced > PCI Subsystem Settings:

  • Resizable BAR
  • Above 4G Decoding
  • Or sometimes, Re-Size BAR Support.

It worked for me. I’m using the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-580.126.09 driver, and everything is running fine now

NVIDIA proprietary drivers wont work until you do some fiddling… it’s to do with Secure Boot. Try turning off Secure Boot. Unless you already have, then I don’t know.
