display zoomed with screen ViewSonic VX2435wm

It seems there is an issue with nvidia proprietary driver and my screen ViewSonic VX2435wm.

When I use it, the resolution(1920x1200) and refresh rate(59,5) is well detected in nvidia-settings but I can not see my whole desktop (missing border), and the display quality is ugly. It is like zoomed.

This screen works well with my old Geforce 6600 GT with nvidia legacy driver and open source nouveau driver.

I also tested it with my Geforce GTX460, it works with nouveau but not with nvidia driver …
Recently my GTX460 died after only 3/4 years (RIP) … and I bought a new GTX 1060 and I face the same issue … it works with nouveau but not with the nvidia driver.

The solution, I found is to set in xorg.conf a"CustomEDID" “DVI-D-0:/etc/X11/edidvx2435wm.bin”
And it works…, but I would like to help to fix it instead of doing this workaround each time I bought a new card …

Tested with debian 9 kernel 4.9.0-6-amd64 with nvidia driver v390.48(from backport) and v375.66 (from stable non-free)

(Do directly linked but too bad nvidia does not go deeper in opensource …)

Did you try to replace the cable?

This is a DVI<=> HDMI cable. It works well with nouveau driver and the geforce 6600 GT with nvidia legacy driver.
How custom EDID could fix a cable problem ?
Anyway if I found a cable, I will try this.

Ok, that thread pretty much explains it, it’s detected as TV and automatic overscan is turned on. It must have some bits set in edid that makes the driver think that. Now I know what you’re seeing. So a different cable won’t help, you’re pretty much stuck with the custom edid unless nvidia blacklists that monitor, too for overscan.

That’s what I would like, a long term solution for me and also other users which are using this kind of monitor.

How can I be sure this is an overscan issue ? (or maybe we are already pretty sure this is the case)

I’m pretty much sure because I ran into the same issue some years ago, just forgot about it. To have a more definitive info, remove the custom edid and add
Option “ModeDebug” “true”
to the device section of your xorg.conf.
The nvidia driver then spills a lot of info about modesetting decision into Xorg logs.

Just for laughs, I had this problem on a MacBook when upgrading from OS X 10.9->10.10 or so, with AMD gpu. The ‘solution’ was to use switchresx to generate a custom edid;)

Arf… If I send you the edidvx2435wm.bin I’m using. Could you see anything which could explain the issue ?

I think the problem is that the driver turns on hdmi audio and the monitor then switches to overscan. The fake edid probably doesn’t define any audio so the driver doesn’t use it and the monitor doesn’t switch to overscan.
Though standard DVI not supporting audio, the driver detects that an hdmi sink is attached so uses hdmi audio over dvi. So this would really have to be blacklisted in the driver for this specific monitor model. Doesn’t it have the switch from post #10?
Otherwise, I don’t know if somehow disabling the hdaudio device would work. But that would be more intrusive than usig a fake edid.

You are talking about the HDMI AV/PC switch ? if yes, I confirm there is no such option in the OSD of this screen.

It’s meant for notebooks to turn on audio, maybe it also works on desktop cards turning it off.

I don’t think I will go with a solution which add a module in the kernel. It seems more intrusive to me, than using the custum edid.

Nvidia developers are reading this and interact if necessary. TBH though, it’s not an issue with the driver but the firmware of your monitor. So if nvidia were to put an exception in their driver that would be a plain courtesy. Really fixing it would a firmware update by ViewSonic.
