ERROR : Flash Jetson AGX Xavier : lost connection

When trying to flash an out-of-the-box Jetson AGX Xavier, I get the error:

ERROR : Flash Jetson AGX Xavier : lost connection

The Jetson is put into Forced Recovery Mode (I Hold the Recovery Button, Press and hold Power Button, then release both)
When I run lsusb on the host device, it appears
I’m trying to use SDK Manager and it fails every time

Is the host a VM? If so, then this would be the cause. If not, then it is something else.

No, the host is an XPS 13 Developer Edition running Ubuntu 18.04.2

Hi jacob0c66g,
The lost connection error can be safely ignored during flashing. Could you please provide the full log for more investigation?

@Jacob,
Python 2.7 must be installed on your system:

Sudo apt-get install python
Reboot just to be on the safe side
Now you will be able to flash with SDK manager without losing connection!

More info here:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1048872/error-when-install-jetson-software-with-sdk-manager/?offset=1

same problem here:
Brand new Xavier board. Unpacked, installed NVIDIA stuff on the machine as it tells when booting up.
Then downloaded Jetpack 4.2
1st Problem: Doesnt run on ubuntu 18.10, so i setup a 18.04 VM
Installed Jetpack and Python there. forwarded USB: → lost connection problem
Used other laptop with Ubuntu 16.04 instead, installed SDK Manager there
Again: lost connection.

It ends with “FLASHING FAILED!”
Click on “export logs” opens the download directory, no log file there

Is there a way to install latest Jetpack without flashing? I am out off options.

Hi gaylord,
The log file is a zip file in the download directory. It is saved to this directory automatically.
The lost connection error can be safely ignored during flashing.
It is also possible to deselect flashing component, and only install target components. Please see screenshot below.

@Gaylord: Just FYI, there is no ignoring the ‘connection error’ during the flash, because the routine aborts.

+1 had the same problem here. While writing this i figured out how to flash Jetson successfully…

I found the following hints helpful for flashing:

  • First download all the files and flash in a second run
  • .. In step 2, click Download & Install Options
  • .. Tick Download now, install later
  • .. For me the installer said 10GB were required. However, that is not sufficient! In the end the whole process consumed 40GB on my disk including both the downloads and the built files
  • .. Triple check the log for error messages. I had a bunch of "Hash Sum mismatch" errors and ended up downloading the files manually.
  • Unplug all Ethernet cables and disconnect wifi on your host. Network with the jetson is established via the USB-C cable. (this was the critical point for me)
  • Start process again from step 1
  • When the setup asks you for recovery mode, get jetson in recovery mode manually! Automatic never worked for me...

I hope this might help someone.

Hi all. The sdk manager is really strange. First it didnt work in Ubuntu 18.10. It also didn’t work on a VM with 18.04. I then used an old laptop with 16.04 but unfortunately the app requires more than 768 pixels verticaly and it does not have a scrollbar. In the end I switched to a new computer with 18.04 and Nvidia GPU and a lot of free HDD on root partition. I also made sure to only flash the Jetson OS in the first step setting the board to forced recovery first. HDD-wise: It downloads 35 GB of data to the download folder(home volume in my case), then it seems to build images (which filled my root fs unfortunately). Then it tries to install a lot of software on the host system also. It take me some time to realize I needed to uninstall libopencv-dev from the host system before running sdk-manager. Finally after 2 days of struggle, it ran smoothly and when I deselect the os flashing, it works even without errors. This was a very. Expensive experience.

@gaylord thanks for sharing.

For anyone facing this there is a workaround.

In my own experience (with JetPack), USB connection was not so fine and I used to do post-flash install with wired ethernet.

Thanks for the link. I just connected a bigger monitor at first. But then the laptop did not have Nvidia GPU so all the host installs failed. Therefore I used another computer then

agree.

Also it might be worth mentioning that I was never successful in flashing the device when I selected a folder on another partition than my home partition. It was something with “run the command with sudo” followed by an error in the log. So just leave the path untouched ;)

Here’s the full log that I get:

Hi jacob0c66g,
Could you please try to manually flash board with below steps and paste the error log if any?

  1. Manually put device to recovery mode:
    1. If Jetson is powered off:
1a) Press and hold the recovery button
      1b) Power on Jetson
      1c) Wait a second
      1d) Release the recovery button

    2. If Jetson is already powered on (even if lsusb shows Jetson as being in recovery mode):
2a) Press and hold the recovery button
      2b) Wait a second
2c) Press and release the reset button
      2d) Wait a second
      2e) Release the recovery button

  2. cd ~/nvidia/nvidia_sdk/JetPack_4.2_Linux_P2888
  3. sudo ./flash.sh jetson-xavier mmcblk0p1

@FelixB: Unplugging the ethernet cable helped me.

Here’s the error I get in terminal:

###############################################################################

L4T BSP Information:

R32 (release), REVISION: 1.0, GCID: 14531094, BOARD: t186ref, EABI: aarch64,

DATE: Wed Mar 13 07:41:08 UTC 2019

###############################################################################
Error: probing the target board failed.
Make sure the target board is connected through
USB port and is in recovery mode.

And just for kicks and grins I tried running the automatic mode through the SDK manager. There was a popup warning that only lasted for a split second but said something to the effect of “Failed to setup Network”

Hi jacob0c66g,
If manually flashing doesn’t work, please put device to recovery mode again then flash, lsusb alone is not sufficient. Please see comments from Stephen https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1048660/jetson-tx2/i-can-t-install-jetpack-4-2-sdk-on-my-tx2/post/5328041/#5328041

Hi jacob0c66g,

Have you managed to get the Xaviar flashing successfully?
Any result can be shared?

Thanks
