GeForce RTX 4060 not working with Ubuntu 20.04

Hi,

I have a new Gigabyte G5 laptop with GeForce RTX 4060.

I installed Ubuntu 20.04 and tried to install the NVIDIA driver using “Software & Updates” and “Additional Drivers” (I selected the recommended one, which is “NVIDIA driver metapackage from nvidia-driver-525 (proprietary)”.

After the installation, I ran nvidia-smi and got an error
“NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running”.

I rebooted the system, but now either a minimal BASH-like GRUB or a black screen is showing up.

I rebooted from the bootable USK key and reinstalled completely Ubuntu 20.04 and the driver and got the same issue.

What can I do for this?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hello, I had the same problem with my laptop and this driver so i return with the X.Org X server driver.
I have a RTX 4060 and a AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX. I have a dual Windows 11 and Ubuntu 20.04.6LTS.

I think my graphic card isn’t use by Ubunu. When I look at Graphics in settings I have llvmpipe(LLVM 12.0.0,256bits).

I have run

sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

Now my driver is NVIDIA driver (open kernel) metapackage from nvidia-driver-525-open(propretary, tested).

But my second screen (plugged in HDMI) don’t work. My Graphics is always llvmpipe(LLVM 12.0.0,256bits).
And when i lauch NVIDIA X Server settings the page is empty.

Also when i launch Ubuntu form my dual boot menu i got this :

I switched to the NVIDIA driver metapackage from nvidia-driver-525 (prorietary) but my Ubuntu don’t work anymore. I got some errors when i launch it :

So i try to reboot and i got the same thing.
Next i reboot again and I used the advance parameter at launch to use the Ubuntu, with Linux 5.15.0-46-généric ( recovery mode). After that the PC reboot with some error and now Ubuntu work. But my second screen don’t work and my graphic is still `llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0, 256bits)'.

eliott@eliott-ROG-Strix-G713PV-GL713PV:~$ nvidia-smi
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

The primary gpu which is driving the internal display is the amd. The kernel is too old to drive it so when the nvidia driver was functional, it took over and displayed on some external connector.
Please upgrade your kernel by using the liquorix ppa and possibly also install needed firmware upgrade manually.

Hi, thank for your answer. I had follow this tutorial : Install or Upgrade To Latest Linux Kernel on Ubuntu 20.04 & Linux Mint 20 to update my Kernel. Now I have this version : 6.2.11-060211-generic. But I can’t launch my Ubuntu without using the recovery mode. If I don’t I have this error and the computer stay stuck.

I’m still on the NVIDIA driver metapackage from nvidia-driver-525 (prorietary). I still have the other problems. I don’t know which firmware I need so I’m a little bit lost on how found and install them.

Recently I also tried the driver-530 non open and nothing change.

.

You can’t use the kernel from mainline, the headers package is incompatible. Please use the liquorix ppa.

Hi, sorry I misunderstood. So I went on this website : Liquorix Kernel : Steven Barrett and add the two lines below in my Software & Updates menu in the Other Software section.
Screenshot from 2023-04-21 08-29-20
So now I have this :

I had reboot, on the restart I got this error and the laptop get stuck :

So I 'm still using the emergency mode to launch it. I still have the other problems.

Please check if you can switch vt (ctrl+alt+f4) and log in there to create a log.

I can log in the Virtual Terminal but I don’t found the command to create a log. Do you know it ? Once the log is created where can I find it ?

Please run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root and attach the resulting nvidia-bug-report.log.gz file to your post.

That was created in recovery mode, not usable.

I still don’t understand why you’re trying to install a three-years old OS on a brand new hardware.

I use this OS because I use a ROS noetic who don’t work on the other Ubuntu version. And the hardware its because I do some simulation with 3D rendering so i need a powerful laptop.

I can’t launch Ubuntu without the recovery mode if i use the 525 non open driver. If i switch and give you the log will it help ?

Please boot normally once, then reboot to recovery and immediately run
sudo journalctl -b-1 |grep kernel >boot.txt
and attach boot.txt.

That log was from a boot to recovery
ro recovery nomodeset dis_ucode_ldr
Please decrease -1 to -2 or lower to find a normal boot
sudo journalctl -b-2 |grep kernel |head -n1

I think i didn’t understood everything. After a reboot (still in recovery mode, because i can’t boot without it ) I had run sudo journalctl -b-2 |grep kernel |head -n1 and i decrease but how find a normal boot ?
