I had really bad case on my laptop: I can’t switch Nvidia card. nvidia-settings doesn’t work and nvidia-smi too. It gives me this message:
NVIDIA
-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.
But I have installed last version of nvidia-driver-470.
nvidia-settings message is:
ERROR: Unable to find display on any available system
(nvidia-settings:3606): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 16:49:29.105: g_object_unref: assertion ‘G_IS_OBJECT (object)’ failed

** Message: 16:49:29.109: PRIME: is it supported? no
This my bug_report:
nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (93.0 KB)
Please run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root and attach the resulting nvidia-bug-report.log.gz file to your post.
Sidenote: please delete any xorg.conf you created.
There’s no kernel driver installed. You’re running a (manually installed?) 5.3 kernel which might miss the kernel headers. Please make sure those are installed or switch to the standard 5.4 kernel. Then please post the output of
dkms status
I updated kernel to 5.4.
Output for dkms status:
nvidia, 470.74, 5.4.0-89-generic, x86_64: installed
oem-audio-hda-daily, 0.201905191531~ubuntu18.04.1, 4.15.0-161-generic, x86_64: installed
After reboot It works. I can use my Nvidia card, but it too hot. Temperature in nvidia-settings tool is high, about 80 Celcius degrees.
Is the fan and airflow working? Please create a new nvidia-bug-report.log.
Fan and Airflow is working.
There is a new bug_report:
nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (379.2 KB)
In the logs the gpu is idle but at 67°C, I suspect a hardware issue. Maybe the heatpipe became loose.
Thank you very much for your help and sorry for my english!
I will check the heatpipe.
