GTX 970 @ 355.11 on FC22 refuses to recognize TV used as monitor upon display sleep resume, TV resta

I’m using a little bit of an unconventional setup. I found a 40" Samsung 4K TV that supports 4:4:4 @ 60HZ and has gotten good reviews as a cheapo 4K monitor, so I picked one up (http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN65JU6500FXZA). It seems to work great as a monitor, aside from some scaling issues with chrome.

It’s connected via single HDMI cable.

My problems arise whenever my workstation turns off the display signal or I manually power off or cycle to another input and then back to HDMI1. Basically, I can find no way to get the video signal to come back on without rebooting my workstation.

I see the following in the logs when this occurs:

Any ideas?

Try the latest driver 356.16 and see if the problem is still there.
If it is generate a bugreport like described here:

Thanks Blackout. I went ahead and updated to 358.16 and 4.2.6-201.fc22.x86_64. I generated a bug report (attached)

I also noticed that I seemed to be able to recover the desktop this morning a couple of times by combinations of ctrl-alt-f1 and ctrl-alt-f2.

Below are a snipped of the logs in versbose mode:

Nvidia-bug-report.log.gz was run remotely via ssh after I could not get the xserve to come back up when switching inputs/powering off the tv

nvidia-bug-report1.log.gz was run after I was able to get everything to resume with a combo of ctrl-alt-f1 and ctrl-alt-f2
nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (117 KB)
nvidia-bug-report1.log.gz (98.1 KB)

So right now my workaround is to use ctrl-alt-f1, which brings back the gnome login prompt. ONce logged in, about half the time the shell has artifacts (but still works). If I run gnome-shell --replace, it’ll repair it.

Bigchingan/blackout24 I am seeing the exact same thing, glad I am not going crazy!

GeForce GTX 970
HDMI 2.0
Samsung Curved 40" 4k (JU6700)
Fedora 23
Nvidia Driver Version: 358.16

My workaround is to use ctrl-alt-f5, ctrl-alt-f1 which brings back the gnome lock/login screen. I do see the artifacts some of the time, in Gnome I just alt-f2 → r

Emailed the bug report to linux-bugs@nvidia.com subject:GTX 970 Wake From Sleep Not Working

Are you able wake up display with xset dpms force on ?

Sandip,

Test:
After issue occurs, from remote machine:
export XAUTHORITY=/home/myusername/.Xauthority
export DISPLAY=:1
xset dpms force on
NOTHING HAPPENS

Go to physical machine
issue the ctrl-alt-f5 → ctrl-alt-f1 trick to get the display back and login
go back to remote machine and type
xset dpms force off → Monitor turns off
xset dpms force on → Monitor turns on

…So it seems that the xset dpms force on/off works after I manually go to the machine and do the workaround.

Just an update: Upgraded to FC23 and 358.16, same issues.

Tracking this issue under bug 200165097 : TX 970 Wake From Display Sleep Not Working with Samsung Curved 40" 4k (JU6700)

Latest update:

Upgraded to 4.3.3-303.fc23.x86_64 (still 358.16) and the issue not only persists, but now my ctrl-alt-f1 trick no longer functions like it did previously. Previously, it would respawn the shell, but all of my open applications would be unaffected. Now, it’s like it completely kills the shell, including all gnome applications (ex, chrome, earth, virtualbox).

Thanks Sandipt. Not sure if it’s relevant, but in my case, it’s the JU5600 flat screen monitor. I’m assuming the behavior is uniform across TV’s being repurposed as monitors though. I appreciate the continued follow-up.

I am experiencing the same issue using a 48" JU6700 under Arch Linux using 361.28 with a GTX 970. The interesting thing is that if I change the resolution to 3840x2160 @ 30hz the display wakes up normally. It is only at 3840x2160 @ 60hz that I get the no signal error.

I can use ctrl-alt-f2 and then ctrl-alt-f1 to get my display back. On using ctrl-alt-f2 I can see that the display is set to 1920x1080 and then when using ctrl-alt-f1 it resets to 3840x2160.

I also tried using a “monitor detect killer” device that is supposed to disable monitor auto detect EDID. This made no difference.

I suspect that switching consoles is crashing (not intentionally killing) your X session. I have been experiencing very similar sleep/resume issues on a GTX 950 driving two monitors at 3840x2160@60Hz over DisplayPort with kernel-4.3.5-300.fc23.x86_64 and the 361.28 drivers. I also noticed that switching between consoles might succeed once or twice after a reboot, but quickly results in crashing the X server or corrupting video memory. I think these are two separate issues.

Does your Xorg.0.log file have any error messages in it after the X session dies? Particularly any messages like “(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate primary buffer: out of memory.” followed by a backtrace and segfault.

I believe I have the same issue
GTX 950 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

everything works fine then if you change input or turn off/on then it doesn’t work and TV says there’s no signal.

But Xorg.0.log shows this 4 times in a row

[ 14744.811] (–) NVIDIA(GPU-0): LLL PRK65A65RQ (DFP-1): connected

[ 14744.813] (–) NVIDIA(GPU-0):

For a workaround I use this script mapped to a remote control button and it starts working again

#!/bin/sh
OUTPUT=“HDMI-0”
BAD_MODE=“1920x1080”
GOOD_MODE=“3840x2160”

for MODE in $BAD_MODE $GOOD_MODE; do
DISPLAY=:0.0 xrandr --output $OUTPUT --mode $MODE
sleep 2
done

I’m seeing the exact same thing on multiple systems, all using GTX 960s. The TVs in question are Samsung JU7100s.

Everything works perfect at full UHD with 4:4:4, but as soon as the source changes, the machine sleeps, or the TV is turned off, it won’t recover, no matter how many times you turn on and off the TV, or replug the HDMI cable. The source will recover upon reboot.

I’ve found that I can recover remotely by forcing xrandr to choose a different refresh rate:

$ DISPLAY=:0 xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 3840x2160 --rate 59.94
$ DISPLAY=:0 xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 3840x2160 --rate 60

I’ve tested on multiple systems Ubuntu and Arch, with 352 and 361.28 drivers, respectively, as well as multiple TVs (all Samsung JU7100s, however).

the xorg log reports this every time I try to switch to the PC source:

[ 373.856] (–) NVIDIA(GPU-0): DFP-1: disconnected
[ 373.856] (–) NVIDIA(GPU-0): DFP-1: Internal TMDS

[ 374.708] (–) NVIDIA(GPU-0): SAMSUNG (DFP-1): 600.0 MHz maximum pixel clock
[ 374.708] (–) NVIDIA(GPU-0):

This is actually a major issue for me, as I’d like to use this combination in an installation.

Any luck?

One interesting thing to note:

I have tested using the 361.91 Windows driver and it works perfectly, so this appears to be isolated to the Linux driver.

Who do I talk to to escalate and get this tracked? I am using many NVIDIA GPUs for commercial products and this is a big deal for us.

isopede, I would suggest you email: linux-bugs@nvidia.com and submit an nvidia-bug-report.log.gz via :
