Help, I bricked my AGX orin 64G

I tried to install the KDE desktop. Now it will not boot. Help

The GUI might be failed, but it isn’t really possible to “brick” a Jetson (most “bricked” systems have a BIOS, and the BIOS itself is corrupt, but Jetsons don’t have a BIOS…the same function runs on a host PC during flash and thus cannot fail).

Incidentally, if this used wired ethernet, then networking should still be up. Do you have ssh access?

Also, serial console would work even if the GUI fails. Serial console is by far the best tool you have. Can you get a serial console boot log? If so, then you could also log in via this and try to change packages.

Note that if KDE fails (or anything X server fails), then usually you can use the key binding CTRL-ALT-F3 to get to a regular console for repair login. Note that a server usually runs on the first binding, ALT-F1, and that consoles would be on CTRL-ALT-F2 through CTRL-ALT-F6, but on some systems it isALT-F2, and so I suggest CTRL-ALT-F3 to find a console since it is rare this runs the GUI.

I do not see my AGX orin

How do I restore it back to factory settings?

You would only see your jetson as a usb device if it is in recovery mode.
You may just use SDKM on Linux host for reflashing your Jetson device.

Yes, I just discovered that. Thanks

Can you send me a link to the serial settings, instructions and commands on how to restore the factory settings. This seems really basic, but I can’t find anything on the NVIDIA developers website.

I tried to install SDK manager on my host system but could not complete it. How do I link my AGX Orin as the target OS? I am a newbie to NVIDIA SDKs.

  1. How do I burn a bootable recovery system on to an SDcard and boot it up to restore it back to factory settings?
  2. Where can I down load the sdcard image?
  3. How do I force the AGX Orid to boot on the sdcard?

The ESC key does not enter the boot options. Any idea when this will be fixed?

Can someone please update these instructions to include ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS.
https://developer.download.nvidia.com/embedded/L4T/r35_Release_v1.0/README.txt?t=eyJscyI6ImdzZW8iLCJsc2QiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5nb29nbGUuY29tLyJ9

Thanks

Ok. Can you point me to the instructions on how to do that? Thanks

This is my first Development project and have little idea what you are asking me.
The ESC key has no effect on the boot. Can you point me to something describing how to login with a serial console?

For JetPack 4.x or earlier (which is a frontend flashing L4T R32.x or earlier) the host PC should be Ubuntu 18.04. For JetPack 5.x or newer (which is what all Orins use, so this applies to you) the host PC can be either Ubuntu 18.04 or Ubuntu 20.04. Ubuntu 22.04 is not supported. You will find docs mentioning SDK Manager (which is a download helper for JetPack) works with Ubuntu 22.04, but it does not make it obvious that SDKM supports other NVIDIA hardware beyond Jetsons, and that Ubuntu 22.04 is not compatible with JetPack 5.x. Confusing eh? Summary:

  • L4T is “Linux for Tegra”, which is just Ubuntu plus NVIDIA drivers. This is what gets flashed.
  • JetPack is a GUI frontend for flashing (you can also use command line and skip JetPack; this increases the range of working host Linux distributions).
  • A typical command line flash, from the “Linux_for_Tegra/” directory is this (not guaranteed to work except on Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04, but it might work even on Fedora):
    sudo ./flash.sh jetson-agx-orin-devkit mmcblk0p1
(this assumes an Orin dev kit)
  • SDKM is the network part of JetPack and login to this aids automatic download and install of components on the host PC.

Thank You Linuxdev. Turns out the microusb cable I was using only had wires for charging, I was able to log in through the terminal. I will install Ubuntu 20.04 onto my host and try again.

What does this mean when flashing Jetson from SDK Manager?
Default ip is not avaliable. Please make sure the default ip is shown in ip addr, or use a customer ip instead.

Is there another server I can use to download the SDK Manager components? After one hour, CUDA failed.

I finally got the SDK to start the flash process, but the modules will not download. Here is the flash log errors…

Hurray, I was finally able to flash my AGX Orin 32GB platform back to the factory install. I followed the instructions here > https://developer.download.nvidia.com/embedded/L4T/r35_Release_v1.0/README.txt?t=eyJscyI6ImdzZW8iLCJsc2QiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5nb29nbGUuY29tLyJ9

and used the following command to start the process >
sudo ./nvautoflash.sh jetson-agx-orin-devkit-as-jao-32gb

Can someone please update and correct these instructions so the poor Newbies like myself don’t waste days trying to figure this out. Thank You for the helping me and posting these mostly correct old instructions.

I am still unable to install SDKM, it appears that the server is down.

For those trying to reinstall SDKmanager on kubuntu 20.04, try the following:
$ uname -a
Linux vance-UM690 5.15.0-58-generic #64~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 6 16:42:31 UTC 2023 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

$ sdkmanager --cli uninstall --logintype devzone --product Jetson --version 5.0.2 --targetos Linux --host --target JETSON_AGX_ORIN_TARGETS
